Françoise Fabian (* 10. May 1933 as Michèle Cortes de Leone y Fabianera in Algiers , then French Algeria, today Algeria ) is a French actress .

Life

Fabian was born to Spanish-French parents in the Hussein Dey district of Algiers. After studying music in her hometown, she went to Paris in the 1950s and took acting lessons at the Cours Simon Conservatory with René Simon . In 1954 she made her stage debut in Paris. The following year she came to film through director Jacques Becker and played in numerous comedies. Fabian has also been working regularly for television since the 1960s.

Luis Buñuel's Belle de Jour - Beauty of the Day (1967) stands out artistically among her many Italian-French film productions . However, she also appeared in banal soft erotic films. She played important leading roles in Éric Rohmers My Night with Maud (1969), Michel Deville's Raphael, the libertine (1971) and Claude Lelouch's A Happy Year (1973). For her role in A Happy Year she was awarded the David di Donatello and at the San Sebastián International Film Festival with the award for best actress. In 2014 she received a César nomination for Maman und Ich in the category Best Supporting Actress.

Françoise Fabian was married to director Jacques Becker from 1957 to 1960 and to actor Marcel Bozzuffi from 1963 to 1988 .
