Jacques Becker (born September 15, 1906 in Paris , † February 21, 1960 there ) was a French film director .

Life

Becker met King Vidor in the USA in 1928 and was confronted with the medium of film for the first time , but was denied a career as an actor and assistant director in the USA. He returned to France and from 1931 to 1938 was assistant director to Jean Renoir , who became his friend and had a decisive influence on him. In 1939 Becker began shooting his first feature film, L'Or du Cristobal . However, he was unable to finish the film as he was mobilized for World War II . In his place, Jean Stelli finished the film. It was not until 1942 that Becker realized his first feature film as a director with The Last Trump .

His most famous films include his prison drama The Hole , When Night Falls in Paris with Jean Gabin and Goldhelm with Simone Signoret . Jacques Becker, who was married to the actress Françoise Fabian from 1957 until his death , is the father of the director Jean Becker .
