action

When the drug addict nightclub owner Roger Dassa refuses to let the local gang boss Tavernier, known as "The Mandarin", use his shop as a trading point for his drug sales, he doesn't live long. Dassa's friends Dan Rover and the killer Viletti therefore want revenge on the Mandarin.

In these days, Inspector Favenin, who was briefly transferred because of unorthodox methods, will return to his post in the police station, where Inspector Barnero will tell him what has happened. However, others on the Bureau, including the President, appear to be receiving payments from Tavernier; In any case, Favenin receives little support in clearing up the case. When Rover and Viletti can actually kill the gang leader, the police are also present; While pursuing the perpetrators, Barnero is shot by Viletti.

Favenin now goes on a lonely campaign of revenge; in cold blood and systematically he seeks out those involved and kills them or puts them behind bars. When the rover he put behind bars is able to break out with the help of Dassa's sister and her friend Raymond, he in turn searches for Favenin to get revenge. He provides Favenin, but is killed by the police. Favenin quits his duty.

criticism

The lexicon of international films expressed concerns because in the “well-acted but ambiguous crime film” the “socially critical references in view of the effect-oriented staging” appeared. Other critics, on the other hand, were enthusiastic, as director Boisset “dissected the emotional world of the acting people with enormous skill and let them steer relentlessly towards the catastrophe,” says Kartsen Thurau.

Remarks

The title of the film in Italy is L'uomo venuto da Chicago . He had over 1.3 million visitors in France.

The novel La Mort d'un condé was written by Pierre Lesou .
