Adolfo Celi [aˈdolfo ˈtʃeːli] (born July 27, 1922 in Messina , Sicily , † February 19, 1986 in Siena , Tuscany ) was an Italian film actor and director .

Life

Celi has appeared in nearly 100 films, specifically in roles as an international villain. His most famous role was that of Emilio Largo in James Bond 007 - Fireball, shot in 1965 . He also appeared as a protagonist in several Italian comedies, such as Brancaleone on a crusade to the Holy Land .

Celi was fluent in several languages, but was mostly dubbed in English-language films because of his strong Sicilian accent. Robert Rietti repeated his text passages in Fireball and Adventure in Rio . In the 1981 BBC series The Borgias , in which he played Rodrigo Borgia , he was not dubbed, so his heavy accent made him difficult to understand, for which he was very mocked by critics and viewers.

Celi studied at the Accademia d'Arte Drammatica in Rome. He was also successful as a stage actor and lived and worked in Argentina and Brazil from 1946 to 1962 . He has directed two films and a television series in South America . In Italy he directed the feature film L'Alibi together with Vittorio Gassman .

Celi was married three times. He died of a heart attack in Siena in 1986 .
