The ghost of freedom (original title: Le Fantôme de la liberté ) is an Italian-French drama film by the director Luis Buñuel from 1974 . The film consists of a loosely held together series of surreal scenes; it is often understood as a satirical attack by Buñuel on social conventions and the inaccessibility of true freedom .

The stick of history is passed on from one to the other. A minor character from the first story becomes the main character in the following one. In a normal situation, one element is always alienated and this creates surreal situations that take the very conventional French society to absurdity.
For example, the school calls because a little girl has disappeared. When the parents come to school, the child comes to his mother and says: I'm here! But one does not listen to him because children are not allowed to speak in the presence of adults, and so the search continues even though the girl is clearly present. The father goes to the doctor who tells him his values are very good, only a harmless procedure is necessary, but it is cancer. The doctor's office assistant goes to her sick father in the country, has to stop at an inn when it rains, where monks come to her room at night to smoke and play poker with her; in the next room a good, handsome young man who wants to sleep with his old aunt, who is still a virgin. She only gives in when he comes back from a trip into the next room, where he and all the other guests were forced by a hatter to watch him play masochistic games. In another scene, a company meets to have a bowel movement - they retreat to a small room to eat.

The German synchronous processing was created in 1974 at Berliner Synchron GmbH Wenzel Lüdecke in Berlin . The dialogue book was written by Fritz A. Koeniger , and the dubbing director was Dietmar Behnke .
