The criminal life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (original title: Ensayo de un crimen or La vida criminal de Archibaldo de la Cruz ) is a Mexican film by Luis Buñuel from 1955. It is based on the novel Ensayo de un crimen by Rodolfo Usigli .

action

As a child, Archibaldo received a play doll from his mother, which apparently had magical powers. Because it is said to have made it possible for its owner to kill a person by pure desire. Archibaldo once wound up the music box as a child and wished for the death of his teacher, who was hit by a bullet in the next instant and died.

As an adult, Archibaldo was lying in a hospital after a car accident and suddenly found pleasure in threatening the nun treating him with slitting her neck with a razor. While on the run, the panicked woman fell into an elevator shaft and was killed. When a detective investigated the case, Archibaldo confessed to a series of murders that he claimed to have carried out this way. But because he had actually never murdered anyone and the deaths described always resulted from a chain of unfortunate circumstances, he was not responsible for a single death.

In the book by the authors Bill Krohn and Paul Duncan about the cinematic work of Buñuel, it says in relation to the special mysticism of the film: “Its atmosphere is determined by the melody of the music box as well as by a comical variation of this melody, which always then sounds when Archibaldo has once again been bewitched by the deadly toy. "

background

Usigli had ended the collaboration with Buñuel on the script after he had made a number of changes to the manuscript that the novelist did not approve of. Buñuel therefore resorted to Eduardo Uguarte, whom he had already trusted through earlier projects, to complete the script.
