action

After years of absence, Alejandro returns to the estate of his childhood. His foster sister Catalina still lives there, whom he absolutely loves and whom he would like to marry. Although Catalina never stopped loving Alejandro, she is now married to Eduardo and is expecting a child from him. Therefore she cannot leave her husband, but does not want to lose Alejandro completely either and therefore asks him to stay close to her. But Alejandro is deeply offended and from now on is out for revenge. In order to create the most uncomfortable situation for everyone involved, he enters into a relationship with Eduardo's sister Isabel. After Catalina dies giving birth to Eduardo's son, Alejandro desecrates her grave in order to caress the dead one last time. Suddenly he sees a figure that he identifies as Catalina and thinks he hears that she is calling him to her. Suddenly the shape changes and you can see her brother Ricardo who shoots Alejandro the next moment.

background

The film is based on Emily Brontë's only novel Sturmhöhe . Alejandro plays the main character Heathcliff, Catalina the same name Katherine Earnshaw and her brother Ricardo takes on the role of Hindley Earnshaw. Catalina's husband Eduardo embodies Edgar Linton and his sister Isabel, Isabella Linton of the same name.

criticism

“Long underrated adaptation of the novel Sturmhöhe by Emily Brontë; laid out as a visually powerful melodrama full of (natural) metaphors. Once again, Buñuel is concerned with the presentation of a life plan that is too strongly based on bourgeois moral concepts and breaks with it. "
