The river and death (original title: El río y la muerte ) is a Mexican film by Luis Buñuel , which was made in 1954 and 1955. It is based on the novel Muro blanco sobre roca negra by Miguel Álvarez Acosta .

action

The Anguiano and Menchaca families, who have been at war for generations, live in a violent Mexican village. There is an agreement between them that someone from the other family who kills a member of their own clan will not be held accountable if they manage to cross the river and do not return to the village in the future.

There are only two young men left from both families and the whole village is waiting for the final and decisive showdown . On the one hand is Felipe Anguiano, a polio, who grew up outside the village in a large city, studied medicine and is a practicing doctor. On the other hand is Rómulo Menchaca, who has never left the village and is just waiting for his counterpart to return to the village to commit blood revenge on him.

In fact, one day the doctor returns to the village because that is what is expected of him. Regardless of the opinion of the other villagers, he persuades his adversary to make peace in public and to end the old families' feud once and for all.

background

“The film adaptation of a novel about a blood revenge that has lasted for several generations is so country-specific that the audience at the Venice Film Festival thought it was a comedy . Buñuel takes great pains in his autobiography to show that the despicable events portrayed in the film were even surpassed by reality. "
