Serge Silberman
Serge Silberman (born May 13, 1917 in Łódź , Poland , † July 22, 2003 in Paris , France ) was a Polish-French film producer .
Life
Serge Silberman was born in Łódź , which at that time still belonged to the Russian Empire , but had been occupied by the German war opponents since 1914, and grew up in Poland. After the attack on Poland during the Second World War , he was imprisoned as a Jew in several concentration camps, which he survived. Eventually he settled in Paris . His first job as a producer was Jean-Pierre Melville's film Three PM (1955), a forerunner of the Nouvelle Vague .
Silberman was best known for his collaboration with the surrealist director Luis Buñuel , whom he met through the screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière . Silberman produced from 1964 almost all the late work of Buñuel, starting with Diary of a Chambermaid and ending with That Obscure Object of Desire , published in 1977. The 1972 works carried out by The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie was a year later Oscar for the best foreign language film award .
In 1966 Silberman founded his own production company, Greenwich Film Productions, which was responsible for around 20 films. In 1981, Silberman's most commercially successful film, Jean-Jacques Seeleix 's Diva, was made . The film was not received very positively in its production country France, but it was a box-office hit abroad. The money raised enabled the financing of Akira Kurosawa's project Ran , which was the most expensive Japanese film at the time. In 1987 he and the director received a BAFTA Award for the best foreign language film
In 1988 he received an Honorary César for his life's work. Silberman died on July 22, 2003 at the age of 86. He is buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
