Michael Lonsdale (born May 24, 1931 in Paris ; † September 21, 2020 there ; also Michel Lonsdale and Alfred de Turris) was a French - British actor .

Life

Lonsdale was the son of a French mother and a British officer. He lived in London until he was seven and then in Morocco . In 1947 he came to Paris. Lonsdale grew up bilingual , speaking French and English . He studied acting with Tanja Balachowa and made his debut in 1955 with Raymond Rouleau.

In the 1960s he turned to cinema. He became internationally known for his roles in films by François Truffaut - as Jeanne Moreau's third murder victim in The Bride Wore Black and as the shoe shop owner Tabard in Stolen Kisses . In addition to Truffaut, he also worked with other directors from the Nouvelle Vague such as Alain Resnais , Louis Malle and Jacques Rivette . In the course of his career he worked with other recognized directors such as Orson Welles , Joseph Losey , Luis Buñuel , Miloš Forman , John Frankenheimer , Steven Spielberg , François Ozon and Manoel de Oliveira . For his portrayal of Inspector Lebel in The Jackal by Fred Zinnemann , he received a nomination in 1973 for Best Supporting Actor for the BAFTA Award .

Lonsdale was seen in many film projects beyond the mainstream, such as India Song by Marguerite Duras , but also in international commercial film productions, such as Moonraker in 1979 , in which he played James Bond's opponent Sir Hugo Drax. He was nominated three times for the French César film award, each time for Best Supporting Actor (for example for Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud , La question humaine and for Von Menschen und Göttern ). In 2011 he received a César and the Prix ​​Lumières for his role as Luc in Von Menschen und Göttern . His work for film and television includes around 240 productions.
