Sites of the Magdalenian

In Oelknitz a cult site was found within a tent camp of the wild horse hunters of the Magdalenian with menhir-like cult steles made of red sandstone.

The village was first mentioned on February 20, 1283. The town's church dates from the early Gothic period and was heavily modified in the 17th century.

The history of the village is also closely linked to Jena , Rothenstein and Kahla .

The farmers mainly went the way of agriculture in the GDR and now work in the Schöps agricultural cooperative .
