Bundesstrasse 88
The federal highway 88 (abbreviation: B 88 ) is a federal highway in Germany . It begins in Eisenach and leads from there via Ilmenau , Rudolstadt and Jena to Naumburg . The B 88 is a total of 167 kilometers long, of which only the last eleven kilometers are in Saxony-Anhalt , the rest of the route in Thuringia . It mainly serves local and regional traffic, as long-distance traffic uses the parallel A 4 , A 9 and A 71 motorways in most sections . Nevertheless, some sections have high traffic volumes, for example up to 20,000 vehicles / day in city traffic from Jena and in Rudolstadt and more than 10,000 vehicles / day between Eisenach and Wutha-Farnroda and between Ilmenau-Ost (A 71) and Gehren .
After reunification, the B 88 was expanded in the areas of Eisenach, Ilmenau, Rudolstadt and Jena and partially re-routed. The current goal of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 is, in particular, the expansion of the Rudolstadt - Jena section without through-transit, while some other projects started there have little chance of being realized if required.
course
Eisenach - Ilmenau
The B 88 originally began in Wutha-Farnroda on Bundesstraße 7 . After this was downgraded to a state road between Gotha and Eisenach , the section west of Wutha was integrated into the B 88, which has since started in Eisenach. Here, the federal highway uses a former section of the federal highway 4 for the first few kilometers , which is therefore expanded to four lanes. West of Wutha you leave the old autobahn route and the B 88 leads down into the Hörseltal. In this area, an intersection with the planned Eisenach bypass to the east of Bundesstraße 19 is planned as a further requirement in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 .
In Wutha, the B 88 branches off south into the valley of the Erbstrom , which it follows to the Ruhla district of Thal . There it branches off to the east in the direction of Seebach , where it was already re-routed parallel to the old village street in GDR times. The spa town of Bad Tabarz follows , which was also given a bypass in GDR times. In Friedrichroda , the main road crosses the Thuringian Forest Railway and leads over several crossings around the city center to Engelsbach , Altenbergen and Catterfeld , which have long had bypasses. It follows Georgenthal in the narrow valley of the Apfelstädt with a through town on the old main road. The neighboring towns of Nauendorf and Gräfenhain to the west are to be relieved by a bypass in the future. This new building route will branch off east of Georgenthal and lead northeast to the B 247 south of Hohenkirchen and thus also take up the traffic of the L 1028 in order to also relieve the through traffic of the through traffic of Herrenhof and Hohenkirchen.
During the GDR era, Ohrdruf was given a western bypass, mainly for the B 247, followed by a southerly continuation for the B 88 in 2008. In the further course to the A 71 , the winding town throughs of Crawinkel , Frankenhain and Gräfenroda follow . The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 envisaged a new alignment to the east in this area, but this was deleted again in the following Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. The shift in traffic from the former B 247 from Ohrdruf to Zella-Mehlis did not take place to the extent forecast, and there was also a difficult topography with increased ecological risks, so that the cost-benefit ratio was too low. With the construction of the A 71 in 2003, Geschwenda received its own bypass with the Wirrbachtal bridge as the largest single structure. Since 2004, the B 88 has been relocated to the A 71 between the Gräfenroda and Ilmenau-West junctions, and since 2012 to Ilmenau-Ost. The old route led via Geraberg , Elgersburg and Roda to Ilmenau .
Ilmenau - Rudolstadt
From the A-71 exit Ilmenau-Ost to the entrance to Gehren, the new B 88 was completed in autumn 2012, bypassing Ilmenau and Langewiesen . The next place is Gehren with a narrow passage, for which a bypass is also planned, which should also include Jesuborn . Between Ilmenau-Ost and Gehren / Pennewitz (junction L 1047 and L 1144), the B 88 takes on through traffic between the A 71 coming from Erfurt and the Thuringian slate mountains and is therefore relatively heavily used. The following section to Rudolstadt , on the other hand, was relieved of traffic congestion with the opening of the new federal highway 90, which was built parallel to the north in 2017. Therefore, the northern re-routing of the B 88 for the Pennewitz / Dörnfeld an der Heide / Königsee area was no longer pursued, which means that the narrow and steeply inclined through-roads here will remain in place for a longer period of time. Especially in Königsee, where the B 88 still leads directly over the historic market square, the quality of stay in the city center is considerably impaired. The federal road then follows the Rinnetal to Bad Blankenburg via the towns of Oberköditz , Unterköditz , Rottenbach , Quittelsdorf , Leutnitz (with a bypass) and Watzdorf . Bad Blankenburg's old town is bypassed to the south, followed by Schwarza , where the main road meets the Saale valley . Schwarza, the center of the Saale arch, was given an eastern bypass for the B 85 after reunification , and a southern bypass for the B 88 is being planned. Both federal highways then run together with a total of four lanes as far as Rudolstadt. In the inner city of Rudolstadt there is a one-way street system with separate courses for both directions of travel.
Rudolstadt - Jena
The section from Rudolstadt to Jena follows the Saale valley and is characterized by high traffic density, as long-distance traffic from Rudolstadt / Saalfeld to the A4 also runs here. The numerous thoroughfares on this section are to be replaced by bypasses, which can be topographically demanding. Two tunnels are planned in Uhlstädt, to the west under the Kreuzenberg and to the east under the Kienberg. The Zeutsch bypass will be built between 2018 and 2021, the costs are around 12.9 million euros and the length is 1.5 kilometers. The level crossing of the district road to Niederkrossen on the Saalbahn will also be removed and its confluence will be relocated to the north. The new route of the B 88 will then run parallel to the railway line. In Kahla , the B 88 was relocated from the city center to the western outskirts as early as the GDR era. The northern area of the through-town is to be expanded to three lanes and largely free of intersections from 2023 at the earliest. The largest construction project is the Rothenstein bypass with a tunnel , which has been under construction since 2016 and is to be released in 2021. The costs amount to 27.3 million euros and the length is 2.6 kilometers. The new route runs west of the village under the trumpeter rock. At the Jena- Göschwitz junction , the B 88 joins the A 4.
City traffic Jena
In the Jena city area, the B 88 originally ran completely west of the Saale together with a structurally non-separated tram line via Winzerla to the city center, where it meets the B 7 . After reunification, the B 88 was relocated to Stadtrodaer Straße, which runs east of the Saale and runs as an expressway from Neulobeda to the city center. To the north of the city center, Dornburger Strasse was originally used (also jointly with the tram) before a new building to the east was laid out, Camburger Strasse. It is planned to relocate the federal highway to the east again on Wiesenstraße, but the northern gap between it and the existing route has not yet been closed.
The B 88 is the most important traffic artery in the city of Jena, which extends along its course in the Saale Valley. This is where the main road reaches its highest traffic density.
Jena - Naumburg
The B 88 runs between Jena and Dornburg on the left bank of the Saale, followed by a level crossing with the busy Saalbahn and a bridge over the river to Dorndorf-Steudnitz . From here to Naumburg , the road does not run in the Saale valley, but instead follows the direct route on the plateau in the east, which is intensively used for agricultural purposes. The small town of Camburg has so far been cut directly by the federal road, but in the future it will also have an eastern bypass. After crossing the state border with Saxony-Anhalt , the B 88 ends in Naumburg at the city ring on the B 87 / B 180 .
