Farnroda is a district of the municipality of Wutha-Farnroda in the Wartburg district in western Thuringia. The district with about 1485 inhabitants is located on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest , about 10 kilometers as the crow flies southeast of Eisenach at an altitude of 260 to 300 meters, the total area of the district is 6.21 km².
geography
The district Farnroda borders Seebach in the south , the Ruhla districts Thal and Kittelsthal , the other neighboring communities are now districts of Wutha-Farnroda: Mosbach in the west , Wutha in the north and Schönau and Deubach in the east .
The highest point is on the Deubach land border on Mittelberg ( 415.3 m above sea level ). In the Farnroda district are also the striking Großer Ebertsberg ( 397.6 m above sea level ), the Hermannsberg ( 380.5 m above sea level ), the Rehberg ( 368.4 m above sea level ), the Eichberg ( 360, 3 m above sea level ) and the Krumsberg ( 338.8 m above sea level ).
Farnroda is in the center of the Erbstromtal . There are numerous springs along the course of the river, which also feed the castle pond.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1260 when a knight Helmricus de Varnrod appeared. The place name apparently refers to the clearing period near Eisenach, which reached its peak at this time . Two other clearing sites with their own landmarks, the later Vorwerk Hucheroda and Berzingeroda , went into the corridor of Farnroda.
The " Herrschaft Farnroda ", derived from the fiefdom of the Lords of Farnroda, included not only Farnroda, but also Eichrodt, Wutha, Seebach and Burbach and was owned by the Burgraves of Kirchberg from the 15th century , who used Farnroda as their headquarters for a long time until it In 1799 it fell back to Duke Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach as a settled Landgrave-Thuringian fiefdom .
On November 6, 1620, the main building of the castle and parts of the village burned down in a major fire. The former owner of the castle, Count Georg III. von Kirchberg still had financial reserves to rebuild the castle. This was replaced by a new building in 1677 - it was a two-story stone building with a tiled mansard roof. The representative interior was decorated with rococo stucco and ornaments , while the exterior looked simple. Immediately at the castle (on today's Farnrodaer Hauptstrasse) in 1754 there were around 30 stately houses, 10 Hintersiedler houses, a shepherd's house, the inn and the syringe house.
The St. Laurentius Church and its parish were located with other courtyards on Schönauer Weg, the church was first mentioned in 1272, the nave was partially renewed in 1667. The large carved altar belongs to the inventory of the church, it is one of the best works of late Gothic Thuringian wood carving. Features of the execution refer to a workshop in Saalfeld. It is certainly the work of an artist who is not named but recognizable by his peculiarity, the “Master of the Meckfeld Altar”. A second altar, which is significant in terms of handcraft, shows the depiction of the Pietà in the main part, Anna selbdritt and Jakobus the Elder with a pilgrim's hat and staff in the side wings. The ornaments used on the shrine are dated back to the 15th century. This second altar is mentioned in files very late, in the middle of the 18th century. Whether it was procured by the Kirchbergers or was once part of the pre-Reformation St. Gereon's Chapel in Farnroda (it stood on the slope, about 50 m above the church) remains a mystery. In the church there is also an oil painting, it shows Matthias Conrad Göbel , he was an important Farnroda pastor and from 1652 to 1690 also the castle preacher of the Kirchbergers. The church is bordered by a park-like area with the free-standing bell tower and old grave monuments - these are the remains of the old cemetery.
The industrialization in Farnroda began around 1880 with the construction of the railway line Wutha-Ruhla . The rail connection made it possible for many Farnrodaers to work as industrial workers in the Ruhla factories. At the same time, the first companies could also be founded in the village, including an electrical insulator factory on the Stüblingshof. The place also had a wide range of craftsmen with several mills and blacksmiths, a Wagner, carpenter, cooper and a wheelwright , building craftsmen and small traders.
In 1919, several previous owners passed the estate and castle to the Hessian family Berthold Anzius , minus 200 hectares of agricultural land, which should be left to the landless farm workers and smallholders of the village of Farnroda for the establishment of part-time businesses. The Anzius family built up a horse breeding business on the estate, but during the Second World War all usable horses were soon confiscated by the military. After the end of the war, the rebuilding of the estate began for the landowning family, which was now in the Soviet occupation zone . The political pressure on the "big landowners" increased unexpectedly, part of the Anzius family fled to West Berlin , but Berthold Anzius did not leave Farnroda until 1958. In 1959 the estate was taken over by an agricultural production cooperative (LPG) and the castle was designated as its administrative seat.
On the north side of the Rehberg, the construction of the Mölmen residential area began in 1985, which was partially built on the Farnroda district. On January 1, 1987, Wutha-Farnroda was merged to form the community of Wutha-Farnroda .
When, after 1990, the industrial companies located in the neighboring town of Ruhla were looking for new business locations due to the worn out building stock , the Farnroda industrial area at An der Allee , only five kilometers away , was designated; today, with the PETKUS area adjacent to the north, it forms the industrial center in the Erbstromtal.
Since the 1990s, the center of Farnroda has been redesigned through urban development programs. One of the first results was the redesigned fairground with a stage in the palace gardens. A modern apartment complex was built on the site of the neighboring Stüblingshof, the manor and the dilapidated castle were also sacrificed to the pickaxe, and the Berthold Anzius kindergarten and a residential building were built in their place. The technical expansion of the Ruhlaer Straße, the connecting main street and the Schönauer Straße was a focus of the construction measures in the years 1995 to 2005. In the local area, the course of the Erbstrom was secured by renewed bridges. Farnroda has its own parish.
Culture and sights
Farnroda, which was designated as an FDGB holiday resort in the 1960s, has a nationally known cultural association, the Farnroda Carnival Association. The Hörselberghalle built on Ruhlaer Straße is a multifunctional hall; in addition to carnival events, sports competitions, exhibitions by regional animal breeding associations, political events, music and dance events take place here. The Farnroda sports field is located directly next to the Hörselberghalle.
A tower about 25 meters high is the last remains of the former moated castle of the Lords of Farnroda. The walls were secured and re-plastered in several stages of renovation. Only a few stones have survived from the Farnrodaer Schloss, located immediately to the east. In the center of the historical location there is also the Laurentiuskirche and the historical cemetery with baroque grave monuments. In the local area there are also numerous half-timbered buildings, they are lined up along the main street and the Schönauer Weg. In the 1960s, there was a small ski jumping hill on the Rehberg, and the Farnrodaer Sportverein built a log cabin next to it, which is known as a ski hut. A circular route around the Rehberg provides views of the Wartburg , the Hörselberge and the Inselsberg .
