Live and act

Johann Christian Mahr lived in Ilmenau and worked there as a geologist in the copper mines. This is how he met Goethe, the Mining Minister of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach . Together with Goethe he went on numerous hikes to Kickelhahn , Manebach and other places of natural historical interest in the Ilmenau area. Mahr also accompanied Goethe to the Kickelhahn on August 27, 1831 on his last trip to Ilmenau, six months before the poet's death.

In addition, Mahr researched fossils , which he found mainly near Manebach. From this he built up a paleobotanical collection that is considered one of the most important of the 19th century and is owned by the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin .

In 1857 Mahr was appointed Bergrat (head of the mines) in Ilmenau.

In 1990 a street in Ilmenau was named after Johann Christian Mahr.
