  • The federal highway 62 (abbreviation: B 62 ) is one of the longer federal highways right through the center of Germany. It runs from west to east through the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate , North Rhine-Westphalia , Hesse and Thuringia .

    history

Inner German border with a barrier on the B 62 between Philippsthal (Werra) and Vacha , 1952

    Construction of the individual sections:

    1. 1846–1848: Biedenkopf - Marburg
    2. 1847–1851: Wallau (Lahn) - Laasphe

From Alsfeld on, the old roadthrough the short Hessen ” ran parallel on the hills above today's federal road.

    course

The B 62 begins on the B 256 near Roth in the northernmost tip of Rhineland-Palatinate , about 50 km east of Bonn .

The road is winding along the upper reaches of the Sieg . After 38 km, the B 62 crosses the state border to North Rhine-Westphalia and shortly afterwards arrives in Siegen (42 km). From the junction to / from Eiserfeld, it has been developed as a four-lane city motorway and elevated road (see also: Hüttentalstrasse ). It continues through the Rothaar Mountains .

After 93 km, the state border to Hesse is crossed at Wallau (Lahn) and the road reaches Biedenkopf (99 km). On the now slightly southeast running route across Upper Hesse to the town of Alsfeld , the B 62 bears the name of two important holiday routes : on the route along the upper reaches of the Lahn , between Bad Laasphe and Marburg , it is part of the Lahn-Ferien-Straße , on the thirty kilometers after Kirchhain (134 km) it is part of the German Fairy Tale Route .

From Alsfeld (164 km) to Bad Hersfeld in Eastern Hesse (203 km) the road leads slightly northeast. At kilometer stone 224, the road crosses the state border from Hesse to Thuringia .

The route continues to Bad Salzungen (241 km). After six kilometers, the B 62 reaches the B 19 at Barchfeld . The Thuringian Forest Nature Park also begins here .

Since the downgrading or renaming of the federal highway 280 , the B 62 has another section from Benshausen through Zella-Mehlis to the federal highway 71 .

The total length of the B 62 is 301 km.

    New construction and expansion

New construction of the B 62 in Siegen and Mudersbach

Construction sign on the former HTS construction site in Niederschelden

As part of the completion of the Hüttentalstrasse , the B 62 was rebuilt as a motor road between Mudersbach-Niederschelderhütte and Siegen-Rinsenau. The planning approval decision was final on March 4, 2010. With the groundbreaking on April 29, 2010, construction work officially began. The main line was opened to traffic in December 2016, the Eiserfeld connection in May 2017. The old route went from Niederschelderhütte through the heavily polluted towns of Siegen-Niederschelden and Siegen-Eiserfeld to the HTS connection point Rinsenau. In addition, a frequently closed railroad crossing that was on the previous track in Niederschelden victory path . With the completion of the new line, the old line in North Rhine-Westphalia was downgraded to state road L 531 or L 907 and district road K 9 on January 1, 2017. In Rhineland-Palatinate, the graduation to L 283 and K 97 is planned, but not yet completed.

Construction and relocation of the B 62 in Bad Laasphe

A bypass for the center of Bad Laasphe has been planned for a long time. Since politicians and the population have not been able to agree on the route of this road for decades, the start of construction is still not in sight.

In 2012, the State Office for Road Construction in North Rhine-Westphalia announced that it would re-route the B 62 in the Saßmannshausen locality so that traffic can bypass the two level crossings of the federal road on the Upper Lahn Valley Railway . In June 2013 there was a serious train accident there, with 30 injured and one fatality. The work began in autumn 2013 and was fully completed in 2015. Now there is only one level crossing with modern traffic light control and half barriers for the industrial park instead of two on the main road. These two were only secured with a traffic light system .

    Local bypass chain in Hessen

According to the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (BVWP 2003), the complete expansion of the B 62 between Bad Laasphe / state border with North Rhine-Westphalia and the A 5 near Alsfeld was planned. First, the Biedenkopf bypass was opened to traffic. The bypass for the Lahntal district of Göttingen is under construction. It will be built together with the bypasses of federal highway 252 for Münchhausen , Wetter and Lahntal . The Eckelshausen bypass is in the planning approval process. Planning has not yet started for the Buchenau bypass. The federal motorway 49 , which is currently under construction , will cross the B 62 east of Niederklein, so that the section with Lehrbach, Kirdorf, Angenrod, Leusel and Alsfeld can in future be bypassed via the federal motorway 49 and the federal motorway 5.

Bypass Classification in the BVWP length State of affairs comment
    Biedenkopf VB - completed -
Eckelshausen urgent need 2.7 km Planning approval procedure applied for on April 4, 2017
Buchenau urgent need 2.5 km no plans yet -
Sterzhausen 2016 not applicable 3.1 km no planning -
Goßfelden 2016 not applicable 1.5 km no planning -
Goettingen constantly 3.7 km under construction since October 6, 2016 together with B 252

Kirtorf not included 4.0 km no planning -
Angenrod and Leusel not included 5.0 km no planning -
Alsfeld not included 2.7 km no planning -

The four-lane expansion of the 1.7-kilometer stretch between Göttingen and Bundesstraße 3 is planned as a priority.

    Reallocations in Thuringia

The law on the expansion of the trunk road, which was amended at the end of 2016 , provides for two bypasses in the market town of Philippsthal (Werra) , but not for the main town. The Röhringshof bypass is classified as an urgent requirement, the Heimboldshausen bypass as an additional requirement. The bypasses around Dorndorf and Merkers in the Krayenberg community that had been registered and urgently requested by Thuringia were not included.

In Leimbach and Bad Salzungen , the 5th construction phase of the Bad Salzungen bypass (Werraquerung) together with the now completed 4th construction phase ( Kaiseroda , Leimbach) are classified in the category of ongoing and permanently planned .

    Werra crossing near Bad Salzungen

A route relocation of the federal highway 62 between Bad Salzungen and Barchfeld is in planning with the creation of a crossing of the Werra east of Bad Salzungen. Due to significant interventions in a natural environment that is worth protecting, the best possible solution between costs and nature conservation has been struggled since the early 1990s. The planners and sponsors of the project preferred a dam due to the costs, the nature conservation associations preferred a bridge due to the impact of a nature reserve, rare biotopes and habitats of endangered species as well as a bridge due to better flood protection. Ultimately, the decision was made in favor of the bridge solution, which will then be the longest bridge in Thuringia. Construction was scheduled to start in 2015. The plan approval procedure was restarted in February 2015. The Thuringian State Administrative Office issued the planning approval decision on January 29, 2020. According to current estimates, the construction of the most demanding construction phase in terms of planning and construction is possible from 2023.

    Extension of the B 62 to the A 71 at Zella-Mehlis

From Barchfeld it was planned to run the B 62 together with the B 19 over the already largely completed new line on the route of the formerly planned Reichsautobahn route 85 to the south of Niederschmalkalden and the B 62 from Niederschmalkalden via Schmalkalden to Zella-Mehlis to the federal motorway 71 to extend. The newly built feeder to Schmalkalden to relocate state road 1026 should be used for this purpose. The current state road 1118 was to be expanded as the B 62 with numerous bypasses to Benshausen . With reference to the new L 1026 and the reclassification plans, including the planned graduation of the federal highway 84 between Dorndorf and Eisenach , Thuringia asked for the Zella-Mehlis bypass to be included as an urgent need or at least a further need with planning rights in the federal traffic route plan and implicitly in the Highway Extension Act. The requirement plan of the Federal Highway Expansion Act, which was amended at the end of 2016, includes the bypass as an additional requirement ; the gap between Niederschmalkalden and Benshausen is not included.

Between Benshausen and the A 71 Suhl / Zella-Mehlis motorway junction , the former federal road 280 was actually renamed the B 62.
