Route 85

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The route 85 was the name for the scheduled until 1940 and located BEEN already under construction Reichsautobahn of Eisenach - Meiningen - Bamberg . A section of the approximately 150-kilometer route between Barchfeld and Niederschmalkalden is now used by federal highway 19 .

This motorway was part of the basic network of the German Reichsautobahn as early as 1934 and was a planned section of the shortest long-distance connection from Munich to Hamburg , which was to lead from Munich via Nuremberg , Eisenach, Kassel and Hanover to Hamburg.

Routing

The Reichsautobahnlinie 85 was to lead through the entire middle Werra Valley , the Grabfeld and the Haßberge and, besides the former royal cities of Coburg and Meiningen, would connect almost every city in this region to the motorway network.

Route 85 was to branch off from Reichsautobahn route 79 (today's Bundesautobahn 4 in the Eisenach– Erfurt section ), from whose original route through the Hörselberge near Wutha (where structural remains of the departure from the direction of Erfurt to the south were also visible for a long time), about here is flat Western forest Thuringian lead, then further west of Ruhla and Bad Liebenstein , east of Barchfeld and Breitungen / Werra and west of the town of Schmalkalden lead past, the Werra at Schwallungen cross to finally west of Meiningen over in the grave field to to lead. From here the route runs between Römhild and Hildburghausen in the direction of Coburg, and then turns south between Bad Rodach and Maroldsweisach to Bamberg and further west past Bamberg to connect to the Nürnberg– Würzburg motorway . In addition to the places mentioned, Bad Salzungen , Wasungen , Themar and Ebern would also have had a direct motorway connection, which, with the exception of Meiningen and Coburg, still have no direct connection.

Alternatively, a branch from today's A 4 was planned further west in the Werra valley near Lauchröden .

history

The " Supreme Construction Management of the Reichsautobahn Kassel" was responsible for the Eisenach – Maroldsweisach motorway section . From 1938, building rights existed between Eisenach and Meiningen and the construction of the motorway was already underway at the planned connection to today's A 4 near Wutha, in a wooded area between Schweina and Gumpelstadt (clearing work) and between the towns of Barchfeld and Niederschmalkalden . A bridge on today's A 4, an approximately ten kilometer long route with all underpasses east of Breitungen / Werra , some abutments for smaller bridges near Fambach and the abutments for a larger bridge over the Schmalkalde valley near Niederschmalkalden were almost complete. After the beginning of the Second World War, the work was stopped and after the war, due to the division of Germany, not resumed. The “Supreme Construction Management of the Reichsautobahn Nürnberg” was responsible for the motorway section (Meiningen–) Maroldsweisach – Bamberg (- Höchstadt an der Aisch ). A connection to the Nuremberg – Bamberg – Würzburg motorway was planned near Höchstadt. Here the route was still in the planning phase when the war began.

Today's usage and follow-up actions

Since the line was no longer realized after the division of Germany due to the demarcation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic and the associated lack of demand, the planned and parallel line 46 , today's A 7 , was relocated from Fulda in the direction Schweinfurt and east of Würzburg, in order to better develop the northern Lower Franconian area. Likewise, today's A 70 now leads north instead of south past Bamberg directly to Schweinfurt.

Today the highways 71 and 73 partly take over the development of the region, through which the route 85 should lead. The already completed route between Barchfeld and Fambach is now taken by Bundesstraße 19, which, however, due to its current two-lane expansion, only uses the Eisenach lane of the former route 85, but as a simultaneous bypass road for Breitungen has cross-free exits. The four-lane expansion is already in the planning stage. On the former route, the bridge over the valley of the Schmalkalde between Zwick and Niederschmalkalden to accommodate the B 19 was completed at the end of 2011 and the B 19 between Fambach and Niederschmalkalden was re-routed on route 85.

The subsequent continuation of the Reichsautobahn from Eisenach to Kassel could not be realized for the time being due to the division of Germany, but is now being realized with the extension of the A 44 from Kassel to Eisenach, albeit on a partially different route.
