Gumpelstadt has been part of the municipality of Moorgrund in the Wartburg district in Thuringia since 1994 .

geography

Gumpelstadt is located at a height of about 280 meters on the southwest edge of the Thuringian Forest . The place is about five kilometers northeast of Bad Salzungen . The Moorgrund, the valley of the Moorbach , runs from Gumpelstadt to the northwest.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1155. The Fulda monastery initially had significant rights to the site before the site came to the Wettin family in 1346 .

Gumpelstadt was persecuted by witches from 1629 to 1664 . A woman and a man were burned in witch trials , and one woman died under torture.

In 1680 Gumpelstadt fell to the Principality of Saxony-Meiningen through the Ernestine division of the estate . The place was initially part of the Altenstein district , from 1868 to the district of Meiningen and in 1950 it became part of the Bad Salzungen district . In 1955 there were 1223 inhabitants.

Historical occupations in the place were agriculture and livestock, later also mining and textile industry.

On March 25, 1994 the communities of Gumpelstadt, Waldfisch and Witzelroda were dissolved and merged to form the new community of Moorgrund.

The B 19 runs through the village in the Eisenach - Breitungen / Werra - Meiningen section . In 2009 construction began on a bypass, which was opened to traffic on September 1, 2011.

Jauchzenthal nature reserve

The Jauchzenthal nature reserve was designated on April 6, 1995. It covers a total area of ​​about 3.6 hectares. The designation was based on the location of the rare plants, broad-leaved orchid and globe flower, which has been proven here according to the protection report . In order to maintain this stock, which could only develop as a consequence of the previous cultural landscape, a strategy for suitable protection and maintenance work was drawn up, which is to be carried out every year in August. In addition to the flora, 47 species of birds, 17 species of butterflies and nine species of mammals have been identified in the protected area. Some animal and plant species are already on the Red List of Endangered Species in Thuringia . The BUND , district association Wartburgkreis, designated the Jauchzenthal near Gumpelstadt as biotope of the month June 2001 .

Alte Warth nature reserve

The second nature reserve is located in the east of the district on the Alte Warth mountain . It covers a total area of ​​approximately 86.1 hectares and was also designated on April 6, 1995. A research station and the Alte Warth information center of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park are in the immediate vicinity.
