history

Carolingian donation

Niederaula was mentioned in 779 in a deed of donation from Charlemagne to the Hersfeld monastery . A copy of the document is preserved in the copy book of the Hersfeld monastery from the 12th century:

“To Aula ( Owelaha ): Karl, King of the Franks and Lombards, gives the monastery of Apostles Simon and Thaddäus on the Fulda in Hessengau under Bishop Lullus a“ Herrenmansus ”(manor) with accessories at a place called Aula ( Oulaho ) the confluence of the auditorium with the Fulda, which Huwart, Gerhard's son, used to hold. "

The old possession of the Hersfeld Monastery in Aula ( Oulaho ) of 8 Huben and 10 Mansen is recorded in the Breviarium Sancti Lulli , which has come down to us in the same copy book. Ortho de Ovilaha appeared as the first nobleman, the name changed in the following generations to Ovla, Owla and finally Aula. The von Aula family died out, and from 1480 the Freihof zu Niederaula was owned by the Weiffenbach family.

As a result of the Vitalis Night in 1378, Niederaula became the property of the Hessian Landgrave, but in 1434 Ludwig I of Hesse (1402–1458) returned Niederaula to the Abbot of Hersfeld.

Office Niederaula after 1700

After the Hessian Landgrave Karl bought the villages of Holzheim and Starklos from the Lords of Romrod in 1686 , the offices of Niederaula and Holzheim were combined in 1787 and the official seat was moved to Holzheim.

During the Napoleonic period, the Electorate of Hesse and thus also the Principality of Hersfeld were part of the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813 .

With the introduction of the district constitution in the restored Electorate of Hesse in 1821, Niederaula lost various responsibilities, including its independent jurisdiction. As early as 1831, however, a “Justice Office Niederaula” was formed, and in 1878 it was renamed “District Court Niederaula”. Until 1968 it remained as a branch of the District Court in Hersfeld.

Incorporations

On December 31, 1970, was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse until then independent municipality Mengshausen voluntarily incorporated . On December 31, 1971, Hattenbach, Kleba, Niederjossa, and Solms were added. On August 1, 1972, Kerspenhausen followed with Roßbach and Hilperhausen, which was incorporated there on December 31, 1970.

coat of arms

Description The coat of arms shows in red, on the right a silver and gold armored owl turned left, whose head turns towards the viewer. In the upper left corner a silver eight-pointed star and in the lower area horizontally a silver four-fold wavy, black-striped wavy bar.

The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality on February 28, 1978.

Meaning The owl is derived from the river name Aula , which means Eulenbach . The four waves stand for the four rivers that flow through Niederaula and the eight-pointed star stands for the eight districts of the municipality. The star was chosen because the Counts of Ziegenhain, who had a star in their coat of arms, had a lot of influence here for centuries.

religion

The Evangelical Church

Niederaula is the seat of the Evangelical Church Community of Niederaula and Kerspenhausen . The church has a medieval tower, while the nave was built in 1775.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The Niederaulas church had at least two previous buildings. The current house was built in 1775 and leaned against the older church tower, with Romanesque traces indicating that the earlier tower was built in this style: the current church also contains the remains of a previous building in the Gothic style . There is a Gothic window and the beginnings of a pointed vault on the eastern tower on the lower floor . On the second floor there is a shooting hole on each of the four sides, while on the top floor a round arch panel with double windows was let into the walls . The tower was once finished with a wooden helmet, which was repaired and replaced in the course of renovation work.

Sports

The Aulataler Asse skat club won the German Cup of the International Skat Players Association in 2007 in Duisburg in a syndicate with the Alter Markt club from Borken .
