The Kirchheimer Dreieck is a motorway triangle near Bad Hersfeld in Hesse . Here the federal motorway 4 ( Aachen - Eisenach - Görlitz ) branches off from the A 7 ( Ellund - Hamburg - Kassel - Füssen ). Only around 4 km south of the Kirchheimer Dreieck, the A 5 ( Frankfurt am Main - Basel ) branches off from the A 7 at the Hattenbacher Dreieck .

geography

The motorway triangle is located in the municipality of Kirchheim . The surrounding communities are Niederaula and Bad Hersfeld. It is located about 55 km south of Kassel , about 100 km west of Erfurt and about 35 km north of Fulda .

The two neighboring freeway triangles in the center of Germany became internationally important from 1989 onwards due to the west-east connection of the A 4: since then, the highways of the routes Hamburg – Frankfurt , Hamburg– Munich , Frankfurt– Berlin and Frankfurt– Dresden , Cologne meet -Dresden.

The motorway triangle is number 31 on the A 4 and number 86 on the A 7.

history

The motorway triangle was built until 1940. The entrances and exits from the A 7 to the A 4 were only single-lane, which often led to significant backlogs in both directions after German reunification . The motorway triangle was expanded between 2005 and 2009. To this end, the Erfurt – Frankfurt route, which is prone to congestion, has been made more efficient. For this purpose, the bridge of the A 4, which leads over the A 7, was demolished on the weekend of November 2, 2007 and a new overpass was then built. In a further expansion stage, the area of integration with the Kirchheim junction is to be dissolved, and in addition (similar to the Hattenbacher Dreieck ) car and truck traffic will be fed into the A7 separately from one another. Construction started on this section on December 7, 2015 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

State of development

In this area, the A4 can be used on six lanes due to the extra long lanes in the inclined sections. The A 7 is also expanded to have six lanes, with the emergency lane also being re-marked as a fourth lane from the triangle in the south direction. The connections between the Erfurt-Kassel route and the Erfurt-Frankfurt route are two-lane.

The triangle is laid out in the shape of a trumpet.

particularities

The municipality of Kirchheim and the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg became a focus for logistics companies , not least because of this traffic junction . At the Kirchheimer Dreieck there is a motorway service station , several truck stops , a motorway maintenance depot and extensive motorway- related infrastructure. The autobahn is so important for the community of Kirchheim that it has even been included in its coat of arms.

Traffic volume

The Kirchheimer Dreieck is a central traffic junction in the German motorway network. With around 100,000 vehicles per day, it is one of the most frequented hubs in Germany outside of metropolitan areas.
