Church from 13th or 19th century in Handewitt (2019)

Handewitt ( Danish : Hanved ) is a municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein .

The municipality was created in its current form on March 1st, 2008 from the merger of the two municipalities Handewitt and Jarplund-Weding of the Handewitt office, which was dissolved at the same time .

geography

The municipality is located directly on the state border with Denmark . The main town of the municipality of Handewitt is seven kilometers west of Flensburg , near the Flensburg-Schäferhaus airfield . The municipality includes the villages and settlements Ellund, Ellundfeld , Gottrupel (Danish Gottrupelle ), Altholzkrug ( Gammel Skovkro ), Handewitt, Handewitt-Kolonie (also: Handewittfeld (Hanvedmark) called), Handewitt West , Haurup (Havrup) , Hoffnung , Hüllerup ( Hyllerup) , Jarplund (Jaruplund) , colonists Krug , Langberg ( Langbjerg ) Neuholzkrug ( Ny Skovkro ) Simondys , Timmersiek (Timmersig) , Unaften (Ondaften) , Weding ( Vedding also Veding ) and Westerlund (Vester Lund) . Handewitt is on the edge of the Handewitter Forest .

The highest mountain in the municipality of Handewitt is the drum mountain (Danish: Trimmelbjerg ), which lies in the Handewitter forest and is 62 meters high ( location ).

history

Handewitt Church (2014)

Handewitt was first mentioned in 1231 as Hanaewith (interpreted as a forest in which roosters are or forest of the Hani ). Handewitt is on the Ochsenweg ( Danish Hærvejen ), which crossed Jutland in a north-south direction, which, however, also led to numerous attacks on the municipality. At that time it was the main town of the Wiesharde .

The Handewitt church , which is visible from afar on the Langberg, was built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in 1883/84 after a lightning strike by the architects Alexander Wilhelm Prale and Nielsen , including the old tower. In 1965 Charles Crodel created the tower window and a crucifixion window for the Protestant church.

The districts Handewitt colony and Christian Heath and colonists Krug came in 1761, when King V. Friedrich people from the Palatinate and Hesse in settled after his lands were destroyed.

At the end of the Second World War , numerous heavily burdened National Socialists fled via the Rattenlinie Nord in the direction of Flensburg ; because there in the Flensburg district of Mürwik the special area Mürwik was created with the last imperial government under Karl Dönitz . In Flensburg they were able to get false papers in order to go into hiding afterwards. On the evening of March 11, 1946, Rudolf Höss , who lived there under the false name of Franz Lang and the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp , was arrested by a British special unit on a farm in the Gottrupel district .

The municipality of Handewitt, which existed until 2008, was created on March 24, 1974 by amalgamating the municipalities of Handewitt, Ellund, Gottrupel, Timmersiek, Haurup and Hüllerup.

The municipality of Jarplund-Weding was created on March 24, 1974 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Jarplund and Weding. In 2008 the municipality of Handewitt and the municipality of Jarplund-Weding merged.

Since around 2015, Flensburg has been so densely populated that it is hardly possible to create new living space there. The growth of the city and the surrounding area is inhibited and the issue of incorporation of Handewitt therefore plays a role again. The population forecast for 2030 assumes that Handewitt will grow by 500 people by then. Handewitt has therefore been planning a new residential area west of Wiesharder Markt street, facing away from the city of Flensburg ( Lage ), since 2016 .

coat of arms

Blazon : “Increased divided by gold and green. Above a striding blue lion , below a golden oak wreath alternately plaited from eight outwardly turned leaves and acorns. "

The lion shows that the municipality belongs to the Schleswig-Flensburg district and that it is close to Denmark. It was already shown with the same meaning in the coat of arms of the old municipality of Handewitt. The coloring corresponds to that of the circle.

The eight-leaf oak wreath symbolizes the union of the eight former parishes that make up today's municipality of Handewitt. The green and gold colors and the figure of the oak leaf are taken from the coat of arms of the former municipality of Jarplund-Weding.

Municipality flag

flag

Blazon : "On the flag cloth, divided into a narrower yellow stripe above and a wider green stripe below, the figures of the municipal coat of arms in tincture appropriate to the flag."

Old coat of arms and flag

Coat of arms before 2008

The municipality of Handewitt, which existed until February 29, 2008, had had a coat of arms with the following blazon since 1988: “Increased divided by gold and blue. In confused colors a walking lion at the top, at the bottom six ears of awned grain placed next to one another with the stalks , the stalks covered with a horseshoe , the studs of which are turned upwards. "

The lion and the color symbolize the affiliation to the Schleswig-Flensburg district and the former Duchy of Schleswig . The six ears of corn represented the parishes from which the parish Handewitt was formed in 1974 in its former form.

The horseshoe was intended to commemorate the past existence of cattle and horse markets in Handewitt and to express the hope for a happy future for the community.

Handewitt has also carried a flag since 1994, the description of which was as follows: “On a flag cloth, horizontally divided into a narrower yellow stripe at the top and a wider blue stripe at the bottom, the figures of the municipal coat of arms in tinging appropriate for the flag, shifted slightly from the center towards the pole. "

Parish partnership

Handewitt maintains since 2004 (at that time, together with the former rural community Jarplund-Weding) a community partnership with Salacgrīva in Latvia .

Economy and Infrastructure

Scandinavian Park shopping and leisure center on the A 7

The economic structure is not homogeneous. Ellund, Gottrupel, Haurup and Hüllerup are predominantly agricultural, Timmersiek is more geared towards residential development. But the number of businesses and services in the municipality is also increasing. The Flensburg / Handewitt Economic Development Association (WEG), a special purpose association, has existed since 1993, within the framework of which the city of Flensburg and the municipality of Handewitt cooperate in the settlement of commercial enterprises. An industrial park on Handewitter Boden is being set up and marketed in partnership. As a so-called Scandinavian gateway , Handewitt is a good location for companies in the immediate vicinity of the border and the motorway. The 125,000 m² Scandinavian Park is located on the A 7 , a shopping and commercial center that opened in 2006 and is primarily aimed at customers from Scandinavia. From here there is a shopping stop for tourists on the north-south axis of the motorway as well as on the west coast and the islands. In reference to the first company that settled here, new roads were called Scandinavian Dam and Arch .

Other commercial focuses are in the Heideland industrial park in the south-west of the municipality, in Altholzkrug and on Europastraße. Today, manufacturing companies, civil engineering companies, craft businesses, bus companies, trading companies as well as banks, savings banks and a large number of other service companies are located in the community. The headquarters of the Danish bed warehouse , an international specialist retail range with Danish roots, is located in the district of Weding . There are also offers to cover daily needs with excellent shopping opportunities.

A Danish primary school as well as a primary and community school with a support center and multifunctional assembly hall are located in the district of Handewitt . Handewitt is also the location of three kindergartens, including a Danish one, as well as a public senior housing complex with a social station and two private senior citizens' homes.

Culture and sights

The list of cultural monuments in Handewitt includes the cultural monuments of the municipality entered in the monuments list of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The most important cultural monument of the community is the church with its churchyard . Otherwise only the landscape of Handewitt and the general proximity to Flensburg, where much more tourist events and objects can be found, are of tourist interest. To the west of the village of Handewitt are the few remains of the Handewitt Tower Hill Castle .

The shanty choir Ellunder Nordlichter under the direction of Iveta Jürgensen is known and active nationwide .

Well-known legends of Handewitt

The giant from Handewitt

A legend reports that a giant once lived in Handewitt who was at a dispute with the neighboring giant in Großenwiehe . Once the giant was so angry that he hurled a large stone as far as Grossenwiehe, which can still be seen there. Another time, the hand-storm giant is said to have hurled a stone at the church in Medelby , but missed it. You should still be able to see this stone there. In the well-known legend about the origin of the ox islands , which are not far away in the Flensburg Fjord , a giant also plays an important role.

The heavyweight Nisse

According to another legend, a Nisse once lived on a Handewitter farm . The goblin- like figure was often seen sitting on the skylight . Every year on Christmas Eve the Nisse was given a pot of groats . One evening when the Nisse was dragging ten ears of barley to the barn with groans and groans , the owner of the farm discovered him. The landlord began to laugh and said: “You already have a heavy burden to bear!” The Nis answered him immediately: “If you had kept your mouth shut, you would have had ten quintals more barley tomorrow in your barn”.

Sports

The handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt is known throughout Europe. She plays since 1992 in the Handball Bundesliga and won the 1997 EHF Cup and the 1999 Euro-City Cup , in 2000 and 2012, the DHB-Supercup , 2001 and 2012, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup , in 2003 , 2004 , 2005 and 2015 the DHB -Pokal , 2004, 2018 and 2019 the German championship and 2014 the EHF Champions League .

The Handewitter Sportverein e. V. (HSV) is primarily dedicated to mass sport. The association was founded in 1960 and comprises ten divisions. Their Handball Division founded in 1974 together with the ETSV switch the SG Weiche-Handewitt , the predecessor of the SG Flensburg-Handewitt that rose in the Handball Bundesliga 1984th

Another successful association is the Handewitter Schützengilde e. V. from 1960 .

Transport links

Old train station in Handewitt, today converted into a private house (2019)

The Handewitt and Unaften stops were on the Flensburg-Weiche – Lindholm railway line , which has now been closed . The local rail transport was discontinued on May 31, 1981.

Local transport is carried out by express bus via the largely parallel B 199. However, the bus serves the localities, so a journey takes longer than until 1981 with the train and can no longer be booked in the DB tariff.

The community has good transport connections. It is located immediately west of the A 7 , which crosses the municipality in a north-south direction. The Flensburg / Harrislee junction, the last exit before the Danish state border, also located in the municipal area, is about three kilometers from the Handewitt district. The federal highway 199 runs north with connections to Schafflund and Flensburg. The federal highway 200 runs south towards Husum .
