Steinberg ( Danish : Stenbjerg , angeldän .: Stenbjerre ) is a municipality on the Baltic Sea coast in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein. The municipality has an area of 16.24 km²; With 830 inhabitants, that means 51 inhabitants per km², a slightly lower population density than in the entire district of Geltinger Bucht, to which Steinberg has belonged since 2008. Steinberg borders the Baltic Sea and its Geltinger Bay near the Flensburg Fjord for a length of 8 kilometers . The place is in the slightly hilly region of fishing and at an altitude between 0 and 27 m above sea level. The extension of the municipality is 6 kilometers in north-south direction and 4 kilometers in west-east.

history

Steinberg was first mentioned in 1352 as "campo Stenbiert", but it is certainly much older. Even after 1945, the village extended to a large extent from the municipality boundary in the west near Bredegatt to Flintholm in the east, in the south to Südsteinberg and in the north to Stürsholz. Steinbergholz has always been part of it as a district. Since the last community merger of Steinberg and Norgaardholz with Habernis and Steinberghaff in 1970, the community area has been defined according to cardinal directions in the north of Habernis and on the other hand to Südsteinberg (bordering the communities Esgrus and Niesgrau) and bordering the Steinberg Church in the west and to Steinberghaff in the east Adjacent to Ohrfeldhaff (municipality of Niesgrau). The district of Steinberggaard, once a hamlet and owned by King Christian I of Denmark from approx. 1450 to 1470 , became an officially registered district of Steinberg in 2010. Steinberggaard, whose residents were assigned to the Steinberg parish as early as 1854 , should therefore be the oldest district of Steinberg.

In earlier times, the so-called Harden were the lowest administrative units in Southern Jutland and in the Duchy of Schleswig . They also had jurisdiction. Steinberg belonged to the Nieharde (new Harde), which had been separated from the neighboring Harden in the early Middle Ages. It comprised the parishes of Sörup, Quern , Sterup, Esgrus, Steinberg and earlier also Gelting.

At the beginning of the 16th century, Quern and Steinberg fought over the Habernis peninsula , which was apparently settled late. The Steinberghaff was first mentioned by name in 1614. The ending "-haff" corresponds to the Danish Stenbjerg hav (= sea, lake). The name "Steinberghaff" originally referred to the entire stretch of beach from Lipping Au to Habernis (approx. 4 km). It was not until 1800 that the name Steinberghaff, with an approx. 300 m long and 100 m wide coastal strip between the Östergaard wood and Steinberger wood, was specifically related to the area at the east end of today's Fischerstraße.

In the late 18th century, the shipbuilder and former navigator Hans Ingermann began building ships and boats, with which Ingermann, who was born in the Danish town of Asserballe, founded the shipbuilding industry on the Haff (Sea) of today's Steinberg. The development was accompanied by a growing local trade in wood to be delivered. Hans Petersen succeeded Hans Ingermann, who died in Steinbergholz in 1807, as shipbuilder. In the 19th century, shipbuilding in Norgaardholz developed on a larger scale under the Diedrichsen shipbuilding family. Over 140 ships and boats up to a size of 200 GRT and a maximum volume of 500 cubic meters were built in the companies, which is not considered insignificant among the shipyards between Flensburg and Kappeln, but shipbuilding on the Steinberg Lagoon after more than a century did had to give up in competition with industrialized shipyards.

Former Landkrog Strasbourg in Südsteinberg

From 1806 to 1814 Denmark was allied with France, so French troops were quartered in the Duchy of Schleswig in the Angling region. It can therefore be assumed that the former Landkrog Strasbourg in Südsteinberg also served as accommodation for the French military between 1808 and 1813 and was thus given the name Strassburg , which still adorns the building as lettering above the entrance door of the former Landkrog.

After the German-Danish War of 1864, the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig formed the new Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein by proclamation on June 24, 1867 . With the Prussian rural community order of 1867, new communities were formed. In 1888/89, instead of the Harden, the administrative districts were created , which for the most part comprised the old parishes .

Water level mark of the flood disaster on November 13, 1872

In 1872 a flood disaster for Baltic Sea conditions hit the Flensburg Fjord in the worst possible way and caused serious damage in Steinberg. From the beginning of November 1872 sustained strong westerly winds pushed enormous water masses into the Baltic Sea, which from November 12th to 13th 1872 with a turning storm at hurricane strength from the northeast pushed the huge water masses westward and thus back to the German Baltic Sea coast, after which many of the catastrophic effects There were fatalities and great material damage. For the storm surge-like flood disaster, water levels of 3.20 to 3.45 m above sea level were determined for Flensburg, Schleimünde and Eckernförde. From this, Steinberg can deduce a flood level of more than 3 m above sea level from the disaster; The present Steinberg districts of Habernis were affected. Norgaardholz, Steinbergholz and Steinberghaff as well as the Fischerholz and Oestergaarder Wald. For the German Baltic Sea coast, these flood levels are still used as a benchmark for structural flood protection.

At the end of the Second World War , the so-called special area Mürwik with the last imperial government under Karl Dönitz was located in the Flensburg suburb of Mürwik, 24 kilometers away . After the partial surrender of the German troops in northern Germany, Denmark, Norway and the northern Netherlands on May 4th , more than 70  submarines were sunk in the Flensburg area in accordance with the rainbow order actually withdrawn by Dönitz . Most of them were sunk not far from Steinberg in the area of the Geltinger Bay . Shortly after the subsequent unconditional surrender of the armed forces , the three sailors were there, Fritz Wehrmann , Alfred Gail and Martin Schilling for desertion sentenced to death and executed. On the beach of Norgaardholz there is a memorial stone with an attached plaque.

In 1949 the neighboring offices of Steinberg and Quern merged to form the common district of Quern-Steinberg with its seat in Steinbergkirche, a district of the then still independent municipality of Bredegatt.

After the municipalities of Habernis and Norgaardholz had already merged in 1966, the previously independent municipalities Steinberg, Norgaardholz and Steinberghaff merged in 1970 as a result of the regional reform to form a spa municipality of Steinberg with the functions of tourism, agriculture and housing assigned in the regional planning plan of Schleswig-Holstein together.

Former school in Steinberg district Norgaardholz (2012)

With a historical look back it is noted that there was once a Steinbergholz school from 1749 to 1973. Then in 1802 a new building was built for a school in Norgaardholz, which was followed by a renovation and extension in 1952. Finally, in 1973, local school operations had to be stopped.

After the old school Norgaardholz no longer served the school purpose, the fate of the merger also overtook the formerly established Ev. Norgaardholz day care center , which means that Steinberg no longer has a kindergarten. Please refer to the offer of the Evangelical Kindergarten in the village of Steinbergkirche, 3 kilometers away.

The primary school responsible for Steinberg today is also in Steinbergkirche; there are additional schools in the area of the Geltinger Bucht office, such as in Sterup, and supplemented by other external schools in Flensburg and Kappeln. In Sterup, the community school in the Geltinger Bucht office, the Heinrich-Andresen-Schule, offers an offer up to the acquisition of the secondary school leaving certificate (MSA). In Flensburg, the wide range of schools is supplemented by private schools such as the Baltic Sea School or the Free Waldorf School. In addition to the high school Klaus Harms school, there is also a community school on the Schlei in Kappeln.

For local members of the Danish minority in Schleswig-Holstein, there is a Danish kindergarten and a Danish primary school ( Hatlund-Langballe Danske Skole ) in the Steinbergkirche district of Hattlund .

Former Flensburg district railway

From 1886 until its closure in 1952, Steinberg was opened to traffic with a railway line . The Flensburg circular railway led from Flensburg via Glücksburg southwards through fishing via Steinberg to Kappeln an der Schlei . The former station building between Süderstrasse and Nordstrasse is now used for the hotel and restaurant industry. After the rail link was closed, the track was dismantled so that parts of the route could be used for road construction.

Road connection

With the inclusion of parts of the route of the former Flensburg district railway, a new road route from Kappeln via Flensburg to Niebüll was planned as federal road 199 (B 199). The section from Kappeln to Flensburg was opened to traffic in 1954 after a construction period of 2½ years and thus opens up the Steinberg area in terms of road traffic in the immediate vicinity. From Kappeln to Flensburg, this federal highway is also called Nordstraße.

Public transportation

The municipality of Steinberg is well supplied with a bus service as a means of public transport . The bus route is set up on the federal highway 199 and leads from Kappeln via Steinberg to Flensburg (and vice versa); bus operation is ensured with line 1568 by Autokraft GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG (13 pairs of journeys on workdays and 2-hour intervals on Sundays, according to Autokraft). The region around Steinberg is easily accessible via eight bus routes via external transfer options.

Port operations

Steinberg is a touristic community in which a yacht club has also found its location. However, Steinberg does not currently have its own port with a considerable length adjacent to the Geltinger Bay ; once there was a shipyard for shipbuilding in Norgaardholz. For a current port operation, reference is made to the small port near Langballigau or to the sports boat harbor in Gelting-Mole . However, the Steinberghaff Yacht Club has a buoy field, where a limited number of guests can also find a water-side boat berth.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Martin, which historically belongs to the municipality of Steinberg and which is of particular interest in this context, is now in the municipality of Steinbergkirche , which has been restructured in the region (note: Quern , historically) and incorporation of the settlement Bredegatt in 1963 . The well-known chronicler Dr. phil. Hans Nicolai Andreas Jensen in his book about the fishing region from 1844 , quote: “Steinberg is of course not a parish of very large size, but the church is uncomfortable, very close to the Querner border, only a few 100 paces away, hence the inhabitants in Steinbergholz have a fairly wide church path ”.

Catholic churches are outside the parish territory. Reference can therefore be made to the St. Mary's Church in Flensburg or in Kappeln.
