Habernis ( Danish Havernæs ) is a small peninsula with a village of the same name at the southern entrance of the Flensburg Fjord , which belongs to Steinberg .

location

The three kilometer long Habernisser coastline begins at Neukirchen and leads to Norgaardholz. The peninsula is located on the one hand at the entrance to the outer fjord and on the other on the edge of the Geltinger Bay , where the so-called Geltinger Birk is located. The Baltic storm flood of 1872 briefly transformed Habernis into an island. At the Huk , a ledge on the steep coast, there are now dikes for protection.

Origin of name

The naming of the place Habernis is based on an old legend with occurrences of a border dispute from the beginning of the 16th century. At Habernis the lands of Steinberg and Quern collided. Both the residents of the parish Steinberg and the parish Quern had their cattle graze in the forest area of the peninsula, which led to frequent border disputes. One day the Steinberg shepherd is said to have killed his colleague Nis from Quern, which is why the farmers from Steinberg and Quern met to end the dispute. It was agreed that the Querner should receive the area and the statement was made: "You should have that for the Nis.", From which the name "Habernis" arose.

At the beginning of the 16th century there was actually a dispute over the parish of Habernis. In 1511 the Steinbergers finally renounced Habernis, so that afterwards Habernis belonged to the parish of Quern. The word "Nis" occurs several times in place names in the fishing area . It means nose or headland . Nis is not only the name of a person, but also the name of a creature named Nis , as in the name saga of Holnis . Presumably the name Habernis means something like “land nose” on which “oats” grow, literally “oat nose”. In fact, Habernis was originally just a wilderness in which people only gradually settled. In the middle of the 19th century there were 7 larger and 4 smaller pieces of land in Habernis that were owned by nobles. One of these parcels belongs to the noble Ohrfeldern and the rest to the noble Norgaardern. Furthermore, Habernis belonged to the Steinbergholz school district at that time . In the 20th century, Quern became part of the Steinbergkirche community . Today Habernis belongs to the Steinberg community. Together, Steinberg and Steinbergkirche are now parishes of the Geltinger Bucht office . Habernis, however, remained beyond these affiliations in the parish Quern-Neukirchen, which continues to exist alongside the parish Steinberg.

Habernis today

Today, Habernis is part of the Flensburg Fjord nature reserve . The Habernisser Moor flows through the Habernisser Au. The artesian spring Wolsroi ( Lage ), a geotope in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, rises in the outskirts of Habernis . 600 liters of water arise from the spring per minute. The Fördesteig hiking trail , which extends from the Falshöft lighthouse to Flensburg , leads through the aforementioned moorland. The Habernisser coast consists not only of a one to ten meter high cliff but also of a natural beach, which is a little stony than other beaches. In 2011, the municipality also designated a stretch of beach as "Habernisser Hundestrand".

The village of Habernis consists of only a few scattered houses. The Habernis area is geared towards tourists. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route leads along the Habernis coastline. At Habernis there is the Habernis campsite with 60 spaces. There are also several holiday apartments at Habernis. There is a snack kiosk at the campsite. In 2013 a beach café was also set up at Habernis. A barbecue facility was apparently also set up at Habernis. By the way, once a year there is a classic car meeting around the lock of Habernis.
