history
Burial mounds indicate a settlement as early as the Neolithic . The place name "Quern" is derived from the Danish "kværn" or the Low German "Quarn", mill or hand mill . Originally there was probably a water mill on the Querner Au (or Quernau) located in the municipality. The windmill in the Nübelfeld district that is preserved today dates from the 19th century. The Romanesque St. Nicolai Church in the district of Groß-Quern dates from around 1200. In various chronicles, the year 1389 is mentioned as the year of origin or first documented year of the village. The first documented naming of “Qwerne” did not take place until 1411, when the Duke of Lauenburg pledged the parish of Quern to the Danish king Margarethe I. Apparently the daughter village of Kleinquern came into being in the 15th century . The original village of Quern was given the new name Groß-Quern over the course of time .
In the district Nübel are the remains of a moth the castle Nübel which for the first time in the 15th century was mentioned. At the beginning of the 16th century, Quern and Steinberg fought over the Habernis peninsula , which was apparently settled late. The district of Neukirchen was created because Johann the Younger wanted to build a Baltic Sea port here in competition with Flensburg . The Neukirchen Church was built in 1621 as one of the first buildings in the newly laid out village of Neukirchen .
In 1970 the communities Kalleby, Roikier, Nübel and Neukirchen were incorporated into Quern. On March 1, 2013, the previously independent parish of Quern was incorporated into the parish of Steinbergkirche .
coat of arms
Blazon : “Standing above blue-silver waves on a green three-mountain in gold, a red tower with an open gate in the wider base, large round window in the slender, high middle floor and three windows in the wider, tinned upper floor; on this a pointed turret, between a red grate placed with the handle upwards on the right and a rising blue moon under an eight-pointed blue star on the left. "
The red tower on the green Dreiberg represents the Bismarck tower on the Scheersberg, which was built between 1900 and 1903 , the grate reminds of Saint Laurentius of Rome and thus the affiliation of the formerly independent community Neukirchen to Munkbrarupharde , moon and star symbolize the affiliation of Quern to former Nieharde .
