history

The church, consecrated to Nikolaus von Myra , was built around 1200 in the Romanesque style. The original construction, consisting of a short nave and a small box choir, began with granite quarders, but for cost reasons it was continued with uncut field stones after the base was completed. On the north wall, the original small windows and a walled up portal have been preserved. In the second quarter of the 13th century, the church was extended to the west by a new portal axis and two window axes in field stones. The south portal, which is now located in the vestibule that was renovated in 1909, also dates from this time. In the late Gothic, in the 14th / 15th centuries Century, the brick church tower was built. The originally flat-roofed interior was given a late Gothic vault in 1521. During a renovation in 1958, the Flensburg artist Ernst Günter Hansing painted it.

The church was placed under monument protection for historical, artistic, urban planning reasons and because it shapes the cultural landscape . In addition, the church furnishings, the cemetery with the church gate, the tombstones until 1870, the field stone wall and the avenue and row of linden trees were placed under monument protection.

Furnishing

The antemensale , the front panel of the altar table with copper reliefs of Christ and the apostles, is one of the most important works of art of the Romanesque period. After it was sold in 1881, it ended up in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. Today there is a triumphal cross from around 1500 on the altar. The pulpit is a work of the Heinrich Ringerink workshop around 1620.

In 1993 the church received a statue of its patron Nicholas, which was carved in a late Gothic style.

Legend of the leaning church tower

According to a legend, a giant lady who was capable of magic and who lived on the island of Alsen once threw a stone at the church of Quern, but because her garter belt broke, she did not hit the tower fully, so that the tower is now today is crooked.
