history

The German Border Association was founded after the First World War on January 22nd, 1919 in Sønderborg as a welfare and school association for North Schleswig . After the referendum of 1920 and the associated cession of North Schleswig to Denmark , the association took on the task of maintaining German cultural work and forms of education and preserving the identity of the German minority . This included the library system , advanced training as a community college and lectures. The association received assets by way of a transfer of ownership from the Nordschleswigschen Volkshochschulverein founded in 1905 .

As a result of the increasing autonomy of the institutions of the Federation of German North Schleswig , the activities of the border association increasingly shifted to the German part of Schleswig . The work of the association changed in the Third Reich , and it ended with the Second World War . After the capitulation , only the library system was left. On September 3, 1946, the British military government approved the establishment of a new association for adult education and libraries based in Flensburg . District Administrator Friedrich Wilhelm Lübke took over the chairmanship of the board, which also included the Christian Democratic politician Peter Jensen . A fundamental resolution of the general assembly on November 15, 1947 regulated the resumption of activities in the library, as adult education centers and in the general area of cultural work. On May 9, 1949, the name was changed to the German Border Association for Cultural Work in the Schleswig region . The Grenzverein reacted to the growing influence of the Danish minority in southern Schleswig . Thanks to financial support from state funds, the association has been able to significantly expand the offers of its educational institutions since 1950. After 1988 there were cuts in funding.
