Holt ( sønderjysk : Holjt ) is a municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein .
Geography and traffic
Holt is about thirty kilometers west of Flensburg between the Danish border and the federal highway 199 to Niebüll . The localities Abro ( Danish : Åbro ), Holt and Horsbek ( Horsbæk ) are in the municipality.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1451 as to Holtte . The place name derives from the Old Norse obsolete ( germ. * Hulta , altdänisch Holti , mnd. Brings Dan. Obsolete ) from that originally represents a wooded hill and a wood. In South Jutland (Sønderjysk) it stands for forest. The place name suggests that the surrounding area was densely wooded.
In 1904 and 1912 there were major fires in the village that destroyed many buildings.

The sprouting oak branch reflects the place name, and it also symbolizes the living community. The number of oak leaves stands for the three districts of Holt, Horsbek and Abro; the acorns stand for further scattered settlements in the municipality.
