The mouth of the Schlei ( Schleswig-Holstein ) has been a nature reserve since 1987. It is one of a number of protected areas in the Schlei Fjord . The area was expanded with the ordinance of May 26, 2011. The area of the area belongs to the Foundation for Nature Conservation Schleswig-Holstein .

location

In addition to the bodies of water, the area also includes the two headlands south and north of the confluence with the Baltic Sea . To the east of the area is Maasholm . To the south borders the former naval base Olpenitz , on which the project Ostseeresort Olpenitz is being built. The NSG takes its name from the former pilot island , now known as Schleimünde , on which an emergency port and a lighthouse are housed.

Flora and fauna

The protected area has been looked after by the Jordsand Association since 1922 , which is responsible for monitoring among other things .

In addition to the bodies of water, the naturally created, very varied beach wall landscape is under protection. The eastern coastline is a typical flat coast of the Baltic Sea with landscape elements such as beach, dunes, beach ridges and dry grass. Several spit hooks with pronounced wind flats formed on the west side . They are especially rare on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast and of great ecological importance for the avifauna ; The NSG is an important breeding, resting and wintering area for Nordic migratory birds. Arctic terns , oystercatchers and various species of gulls , ducks and geese are regularly observed here.

A herd of robust Galloway cattle ensures extensive grazing and careful management all year round with the aim of preserving a suitable habitat for meadow-breeding bird species.
