The Langballigau valley is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Westerholz , Langballig and Dollerup in the Schleswig-Flensburg district .

The approximately 124 hectare nature reserve is registered under number 137 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled at the end of 1990 (date of regulation: December 13, 1990). The nature reserve is largely part of the FFH area "Coastal Areas Flensburg Fjord from Flensburg to Geltinger Birk" and is largely surrounded by the landscape protection area "Flensburg Fjord". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Schleswig-Flensburg district.

The nature reserve is located east of Flensburg . It protects the deeply cut brook valley of the Langballigau, lying in a glacial channel , with its largely natural meandering course, together with the two tributaries Schulau and Schiebek. The Langballigau has flooding vegetation. It is of wet grassland areas with Hochstaudenfluren , reed areas and swamp forests accompanied. Meadowsweet , cabbage thistle , forest angelica and broad-leaved orchid grow here . Iris and water mint are found in the swamp forests . Near-natural deciduous and mixed forests with sycamore maple , elm , beech and ash or pure beech forests grow on the valley slopes . In the north, a saltwater-influenced grassland area is included in the nature reserve. Due to the influence of floods, the lower part of the Bachtal is also partially influenced by salt water.

The areas in the nature reserve were previously used for agriculture. After being placed under protection, they were taken out of use, the naturally moist areas were rewetted and left to develop naturally. Moist grassland areas should also be preserved as living space. For this purpose, parts of the nature reserve are extensively grazed with robust cattle in order to push back reed beds and bushes.

The river valleys are the habitat of the gray wagtail and kingfisher as well as numerous other bird species . There are also many species of dragonflies , grasshoppers and butterflies here .

The nature reserve is crossed by the district road 97 at Langballigholz shortly before the confluence of the Langballigau in the Flensburg Fjord . In Unewatt, east of Langballig, the nature reserve is interrupted by the village. Several hiking trails run through the nature reserve . The area, which is managed by the nature conservation association in the Langballig office, belongs to the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation .
