Holnis peninsula is the name of a nature reserve on the Holnis peninsula in the Schleswig-Flensburg district and adjacent areas of the Flensburg Fjord, which is part of the Schleswig-Holstein city ​​of Glücksburg (Baltic Sea) .

Nature reserve

The nature reserve is around 360  hectares . It is registered under number 155 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. The area is part of the FFH area "Coastal Areas Flensburg Fjord from Flensburg to Geltinger Birk" and the EU bird sanctuary "Flensburg Fjord". The reserve borders often to the conservation area "Flensburg Fjord" as well as south to the nature reserve " Pugumer lake and surrounding area " (both protected areas are separated by a road). The area has been under protection since 1993 (date of regulation: April 30, 1993). The area is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein regional association of the German Nature Conservation Union .

The city of Glücksburg applied for the protection of the area in 1983, after the peninsula had already been supervised by the German Association for Bird Protection and the Green Glücksburg Action Alliance since 1982.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Glücksburg (Baltic Sea). It places parts of the Holnis peninsula and upstream areas of the Flensburg Fjord in the transition area between the outer and inner fjords under protection. The areas of the protected area extend primarily along the west and north coast of Holnis, while the east coast is mainly used for tourism. The area of ​​the Flensburg Fjord in the nature reserve may only be used in exceptional cases.

To the south of the nature reserve is the Great Noor, a former beach lake that was dammed between 1924 and 1929. The area, which is up to 2.5 meters below sea level in places, is drained by ditches and a pumping station. The area is occupied by grassland . The areas have belonged to the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation since the 1990s and are extensively grazed.

To the north, there is another former beach lake, the Little Noor. This was dammed in 1870 and the area drained. Since 1995 these areas have also belonged to the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation. Since 2001 a rewetting of about 9 hectares of little Noor decided. In 2002 the area was redesigned and reconnected to the inner fjord via a breach in the 530 meter long dike. As a result, a valuable brackish water habitat has developed.

Cliff coast

The part of the nature reserve north and northeast of the Kleiner Noors is formed by Ice Age moraines and is significantly higher than the southern area of ​​the nature reserve. The moraines fall on the Holnis cliff in the west, which was declared a natural monument on February 14, 1978 , and in the north and east as a steep coast to the Flensburg Fjord. The edges of the cliffs are almost free of plants. There are many trees on the hilltops. To the north of the Holnis cliff there is a salt marsh in what was once a small bay , which was created by the silting up of a beach lake behind a beach wall . The Höftsee has been preserved as the remainder of the Strandsee.

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve is the habitat of a diverse flora and fauna . So here are z. B. around 65 breeding bird species native.

The Kleine Noor offers a habitat for various seagulls , ducks and swans . Also lapwing and oystercatcher are native in the nature reserve. In particular, the salt marsh and beach area north of the Holnis cliff also offer redshank and ringed plover a suitable habitat. Furthermore come z. B. avocets , gray and great egrets , green shanks , sandpiper , arctic tern , middle and goosander , teal , gadfly , white rail and shelduck . Reeds offer z. B. the reed warbler a suitable habitat. There is a colony of sand martins on the Holnis cliff .

In the area of ​​the salt marsh, samphire , beach plantain and beach aster settle . The beach aster has also settled around the Kleine Noor, as have other species of the salt marsh such as the beach trident, centaury and lagoon . On the meadows in the area of ​​the Great and Little Noors, u. a. the broad-leaved orchid . The marsh goose thistle settles along the foot of the cliff and on sandbanks . Even Curled Dock and chicory are found. Coltsfoot also partially colonizes the edges of the cliffs.

In winter the nature reserve is a resting and wintering area for various ducks and limicoles . So here are Wigeon , Tufted Duck , Common Goldeneye , Common Pochard , Common Eider , minke , hood and red-necked grebe and goose , Central and Smew , but also various gulls as shell , silver , storm and headed gull found. Even gray , nuns and brent geese and Alpine beach runner , sickle beach runner , red knot , Golden Plover , Bar-tailed Godwit , Curlew and Redshank rest in the area.

Others

There are information boards from the state of Schleswig-Holstein and NABU Germany in the nature reserve. In the south of the nature reserve there is an observation tower from which the Great Noor as well as parts of the nature reserve "Pugumer See and surroundings" bordering to the south can be seen. A nature conservation station operated by NABU is located near the Holnis cliff.

A small observation shelter is located in the northwest of the Kleiner Noors. There is also a small observation platform on the edge of the salt marsh near the beach.

Parts of the nature reserve are grazed with Scottish highland cattle for care .
