The dune on the Rimmelsberg is a small, only seven hectare large dune area in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Jörl . It has been under protection since 1938. The nature reserve consists of undulating, hilly terrain, which has numerous juniper bushes and is surrounded by an oak crust . With its heaths and dunes and one of the largest juniper stocks in Schleswig-Holstein, it is a specialty in the otherwise intensively used agricultural landscape. The nature reserve is also part of the larger FFH area DE-1321-303 Dunes on the Rimmelsberg and is therefore part of the European network of protected areas Natura 2000 . The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Heimatbund (SHHB) eV

The area is on the east side of the Rimmelsberg. It was previously used as forest pasture , which has led to the sparse woody stands. The common heather , however, is over-aged and has been grazed with wire smears . In the depressions close to the groundwater, the characteristic types of wet heather such as bell heather , bulky rush and wood lice herb are increasingly being pushed back by more competitive species. Warmth-loving invertebrates are particularly common in the nature reserve . These include, for example, the little owl, as well as wasps and wasps. The name Rimmelsberg itself goes back to Danish rimme ( Old Norse rimi ) for a row of dunes or a ridge.
