The Os near Süderbrarup ( Danish : Sønder Brarup Ås or Åsen ) is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein municipality of Süderbrarup in the Schleswig-Flensburg district .

The approximately 30  hectare nature reserve is entered under number 2 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. In 2003 it was expanded by 1.27 hectares to its present size (date of regulation: August 12, 2003) and replaces the nature reserve of the same name, designated in 1956 (date of regulation: December 10, 1956). The nature reserve is almost entirely part of the FFH area “Wellspanger-Loiter-Oxbek-System and adjacent forests”. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Schleswig-Flensburg district.

The nature reserve is located directly north of Süderbrarup on the edge of the Schlei Nature Park . It turns into the Weichselian arisings, about 500 meters long and up to 9 meter high Os in the valley of Oxbek and adjoining lowland areas of water, wetlands , reeds and Bruchwald under protection. The Os itself was already protected by police regulations in 1926. With 1.27 hectares, it was the smallest nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. Part of the Os was removed for the construction of an embankment for the Kiel – Flensburg railway line , which opened in 1881 and crosses the nature reserve. The nature reserve borders the Oxbek in the north.

The sandy subsoil of the Os is the location of dry grassland and heather with typical vegetation adapted to nutrient-poor locations, including z. B. Carthusian carnation , apple-rose meadow knapweed and round-leaved bellflower . Often there is woody growth that is pushed back by decussing . In damp locations in the lowlands, z. B. Wire sedge and small valerian as well as marsh marigolds and various orchids can be found. To the south of the Os there is a pond surrounded by a break forest . The grassland areas in the nature reserve are mainly used for agriculture. Sometimes the pastures are grazed with robust cattle and sheep. To the west of the embankment there is also an arable land .

By the nature reserve one runs Wirtschaftsweg that can be used as a hiking and biking trail. There are lookout points on the edge of the Os and the Oxbek. The area is looked after by the Geobotany Working Group in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.
