The little hawkmoth ( Deilephila porcellus ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of hawkers (Sphingidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 40 to 45 millimeters. They have olive-green forewings, which have irregularly delimited pink-colored areas on the front and especially on the outer edge. The hind wings are light greenish and also have a pink band. The body of the animals is also colored pink and olive green, with the two colors appearing differently dominant depending on the individual. The legs and antennae are white.

The caterpillars are approx. 70 millimeters long and are very similar to those of the medium wine owl . They also have a green, later brown basic color and two eye spots each on the second and third segments, the first pair being larger. The distinction to the similar species lies in the regular black and more inwardly lying light border of the eye-spots and in the horn only formed as a small hump at the end of the abdomen, which is significantly longer and tapered in the similar species. The caterpillar is also significantly thicker than usual in the area of the eye spots, and towards the small head it is much slimmer.

Similar species

distribution

The animals are found all over Europe , with the exception of the far north, in North Africa and Asia , east to Iran . They live in open and sunny places, such as B. on dry grass or on embankments, river banks and roadsides.

Way of life

The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and fly to flowers in a hovering flight to suckle nectar. But they also suck on tree sap that is leaking out.

Flight and caterpillar times

The moths fly in one generation from mid-May to early July, the caterpillars are found from July to August. In very hot years or in warm regions, the animals also fly in a second generation.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on bedstraws , especially white bedstraw ( Galium album ) and real bedstraw ( Galium verum ). But they also eat fireweed ( Epilobium spec.).

development

The females lay their eggs individually or in small groups on the buds of the forage plants. The hatching caterpillars hide on the ground during the day and only come out to eat at night or on very cloudy days. They pupate on the ground under parts of plants or in the ground in a loose web. The butterfly only hatches after it has hibernated.
