August Seydler
August Johann Friedrich Seydler (born June 1, 1849 in Senftenberg , Bohemia , † June 22, 1891 in Prague ) was a Bohemian physicist and astronomer.
After completing his studies in philosophy, Seydler took a position as an assistant at the Prague observatory in 1870 , and in 1872 he was promoted to adjunct . At the same time, he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in mathematical physics. In 1882 Seydler became an associate professor, then in 1885 a full professor of mathematical physics and astronomy at the newly founded University of Bohemia in Prague.
In addition to numerous physical treatises, Seydler wrote in particular a two-volume work on “Theoretical Physics” in the Czech language (he was unable to complete a third volume).
In the astronomical field Seydler dealt with orbital calculations of minor planets and comets , but he also published theoretical studies such as "About the four-body problem," "Contributions to the two- and three-body problem" or "Contributions to the solution of Kepler's problem" . Seydler founded the Astronomical Institute of the Bohemian University in 1886.
The asteroid (6586) Seydler was named after him. In 1885 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
