The Handewitter forest , popularly Handewitt Busch called, is a 590  hectare large forest in Schleswig-Flensburg.

description

The forest area is on the outskirts of the village of Handewitt and borders the localities of Altholzkrug , Weding and Hüllerup . The forest is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. In the last 20 years, some areas were added through reforestation. In the forest, which has a well-developed network of paths, the highest elevation of the Handewitts ( Lage ) is at 62 m . In the northeast, the federal motorway 7 separates a small part of the forest from the rest over a length of approx. 1.7 km. The Altholzkrug rest areas are located in this section at the beginning of each direction of travel.

vegetation

Originally, the Handewitter Forest was part of an extensive deciduous forest. After centuries of overexploitation, which was only ended in the 18th century with the appointment of a hunter , fast-growing conifers still dominate. Notably then were Norway spruce , Sitka spruce , Douglas fir and white fir was planted. Occasionally, pine or hemlock also thrive on the sandy soil . Most of the hardwoods are oak and beech . After severe storm damage in 1962 ( Hurricane Vincinette ) and 1967 ( Adolph-Bermpohl-Hurricane ), they were forced to change the cultivation concept and plant more hardwoods again. In near-natural silviculture , according to the principles of which the forest is managed today, the proportion of coniferous wood is now to be pushed back further and local tree species such as beech and oak are given priority again.

Others

The area is part of the Flensburg state forest. The administration is carried out by the Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesforsten ( AöR ) in Neumünster . A district manager is responsible for looking after the Handewitter Forest as well as the surrounding areas - for example the Klueser Forest or the Glücksburg Forest . The short-toed eagle brooded here until 1884 . Today black woodpeckers and bats can be seen. There is also a forest kindergarten in the Handewitter Forest.

After the devastating storms Christian (2013) and especially Xaver (2017), large areas of the forest again suffered a veritable clear-cut, which is still clearly visible today.
