The klues forest (also Kluesries and Kluesrieser wood called on Danish Klusris ) is an approximately 109 hectares large forest in the north of Flensburg or in the northeast of the municipality Harrislee in Schleswig-Holstein . Most of it belongs to the Harrislee community, although the area also belongs to the Flensburg state forest and borders on Klues .

history

The forest was first documented in writing in 1399. At first it was referred to in different spellings as Krokrys, Kroxriis (1427) or Krusris (1568), going back to old Danish. krōk ( altn. krōkr , neudä. krog ), which in the meaning of bend probably means the angular bay of the fjord. The suffix -ries or dan. -ris denotes a bush forest. The forest was later referred to as Kluesries (in Ger.) Or Klusris (in Danish), going back to the chapel that gave the city district of Klues ( Klus ) its name.

description

Larch stock with planted beech trees as a substructure

The forest runs from Kluesrieser Weg in Flensburg to Alten Kirchenweg near Niehuusfeld ( Harrislee ). At almost 59 m above sea level, the highest point in the community of Harrislee is reached on the Alter Kirchenweg at the edge of the forest. In June the hawkweed blooms on the slopes and reaches its southwestern limit of distribution on the Flensburg Fjord. The proximity to the town of Wassersleben and the Flensburg Fjord is also characteristic of the Klues forest. The Kluesries forest area is part of the Flensburg state forest and is designated as a landscape protection area. The Kollunder Forest and the Krusau Tunnel Valley are in the immediate vicinity . The hilly terrain of the Klueser Forest is a legacy from the Vistula period. There are clay-rich soils on the slopes of the forest. The holly (Ilex), a protected shrub species, is common. The predominant tree species on the drier soils is the beech, the coniferous wood stocks were planted. These include mainly Sitka spruce , Douglas fir , spruce , white fir and Japanese larch

division

The Klues forest is not a contiguous forest area. It is divided into the enclosure sections Kluesries, Niehhuusfeld, Kupfermühle, Wassersleben, Ostseebad and Flensburg-Klues.

Recreational forest water life

Integrated into the Klueser Forest is the " Wasserleben recreational forest ", which makes up 76 hectares of the area. In this area of the forest there are numerous benches, as well as the leisure clearing, a popular destination for local recreation .

Leisure clearing

In the former recreational clearing , which was in the middle of the forest, until mid-2012 there was a well-developed barbecue area with benches and tables, as well as a nature playground with an information board and numerous equipment. Furthermore, a forest teaching garden was set up in the recreational clearing in 2006 . Different types of trees were planted and information boards were set up.

Part of the recreational clearing

The recreational clearing occasionally turned out to be a problem for the forest and a negative example of how humans deal with nature. The forest was often driven through to get to the barbecue area. Vandalism, the lighting of open fires, wild camping and littering were also a serious problem.

In June 2012, the recreational clearing was closed because traffic safety was no longer guaranteed due to trees in danger of falling. A few weeks later the facility was removed from the Harrislee parish. The forest teaching garden was also closed in 2012.

New opening

In September 2013, the greatly reduced facility was reopened in a different part of the forest, close to the old church path. In addition to a new barbecue hut, a fitness trail and new play equipment for children have been built.

Management

The majority of the Klues forest is owned by the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests and has been looked after by the Glücksburg forestry and its district manager since August 1st, 2006 . A much smaller part of the forest area is owned by the city of Flensburg, which has commissioned a city forester to manage its forest areas. In addition, around 2-3 hectares of forest are privately owned. Up until the year 2000 there was a game reserve within the private forest area and the adjacent forest meadow, in which sika deer were kept.

Basic principle of management

The forest is managed according to the principles of near-natural silviculture; In the future, the proportion of the coniferous wood stock will be significantly reduced.
