Wasserkleben ( Danish Sosti , formerly Sostie in German ) is a settlement in the Schleswig-Flensburg district on the German-Danish border near Kruså (Krusau), which borders Flensburg to the north and is located directly in a bay on the beach of the Flensburg Fjord . One of the city's public bathing beaches is located here .

history

Emergence

Water life originated as a villa suburb of Flensburg. The German name Wassersleben goes back to the former secretary of the German Chancellery in Denmark , Conference Councilor Joachim Wasserschlebe (* May 1, 1709 , † March 13, 1787 ). In 1780 he bought a larger piece of land near the mouth of the Krusau, right on the water, as a retirement home. The name Sostie (Danish Sosti ) used in Danish and earlier also in German is the older name that was first documented in writing in 1767. It is made up of the terms for pig and stable (anord. Stīa ) or possibly path (Danish sti ) and means, for example, pigsty or wild boar path . The name may come from the fact that farmers used to keep pigs in the forests by the fjord.

Developments in the 19th century

Water life used to belong to the parish of Bov (German construction ). Since 1871, water life was part of the rural community Niehuus . At some point during this time, all rural parishes of the parish were placed under the administrative district of Bau .

From 1816 to around 1830 Johannes Sybrandt Lorenzen ran a brick factory in Wassersleben. The community leader and lieutenant a. On March 3, 1873, D. Karl Julius Paul Lorenzen submitted a building application for a site in Wassersleben on which his grandfather (Johannes Sybrandt Lorenzen) had already operated a brick factory until 1830 and on which he wanted to run a brick factory again. The application was approved on September 12th of that year and Lorenzen then began production. The Zieglei remained in operation until around 1890, despite changing owners. It was finally demolished in 1895.

In the time of National Socialism

Together with the neighboring community of Kupfermühle , Wassersleben was incorporated into Harrislee during the Nazi era in 1938 , although there were and are hardly any direct connections there and the settlement is extremely close to Flensburg.

At the end of the Second World War , the so-called special area Mürwik with the last imperial government under Karl Dönitz was on the opposite side of the fjord . After the partial surrender of the German troops in northern Germany, Denmark, Norway and the northern Netherlands on May 4th , more than 70 submarines were sunk in the Flensburg area in accordance with the rainbow order actually withdrawn by Dönitz, most of them in the area of the Geltinger Birk . Apparently, on May 5, 1945, four submarines were sunk near water life. There were sunk U 1303 and U 1304 , which, incidentally, by the Society shipbuilding Flensburger had been built and U 3033 and U 3034 of the Type XXI submarine , the then most modern submarine type. At the time of the surrender , numerous war and merchant ships were anchored in the fjord, some of which were apparently at water life.

In the post-war period

On February 10, 1971, the beach of Wassersleben, consisting of approximately 147.5 hectares, was removed from the city of Flensburg and apparently also fell to the community of Harrislee. Since then, Wassersleben has been competing with the nearby Baltic Sea resort from the 1870s, which can be reached by a short walk, and the Solitüde lido on the opposite side of the fjord, which was also created in the 1920s.

Water life today

Even today, water life is part of the community Harrislee in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. Nowadays, water life has a tourist tax-free sandy beach in the Flensburg Fjord , which was greatly expanded in 1971 by sand washes. A marked flat area is monitored by the DLRG during the high season . In the past, there were some closures in the northern section of the bay due to contamination by coli bacteria . In midsummer the beach is frequented by both Germans and Danes . The stone grave Räuberhauptmannsberg is located in the municipality . The radio program of the area is broadcast by the broadcaster Wasserleben .

For over 10 years, the northernmost Biikebrennen in the country has been taking place on the beach on February 21 . However, there is no cultural tradition of the Frisian Biikebrennen in the Flensburg area. However, Friesland plays a certain role in the history of the city of Flensburg: Knight Fleno , who, according to legend, played a role in the founding of the city, is said to have come from Leck . It is also assumed that Frisian was the third colloquial language between 1200 and 1400 . In addition, 800 friezes at the siege of the intended Duburg 1431 with their entrenchments a significant proportion have had on the defeat of the castle.

A forest hiking trail leads from Wassersleben via the Schusterkate border crossing to Kollund . The Klues forest is nearby . A recreational forest with a barbecue area as well as a lawn area and a mini golf course are integrated into water life . Large parts of aquatic life are now part of a landscape conservation area .

The bathing water quality has been rated as average in the past few years.
