Ostseebad ( Danish : Østersøbadet ) is the name of a lido in the Klues district of Flensburg that was built in 1872 . The Ostseebad, which consists of a beach and the Ostseebadpark , does not have the predicate Seebad , that is, it does not belong to the corresponding Baltic Sea resorts .

history

The idea for the bathroom came from the Flensburg doctor Peter Henningsen. In 1872, together with some merchants, he founded a public limited company, the Ostseebadgesellschaft , through which a large plot of land was acquired on the fjord bank of the Klueser Forest . The bathing establishment was opened there in 1873, the Ostseebadpark was created and the access roads were expanded in the following years. So in 1875 the Ostseebadweg (Østersøbadvej) and in 1878 the road Am Ostseebad (Ved Østersøbadet) was created . In 1880 the city took over the bath.

The Ostseebad is the nucleus of the Flensburg Swimming Club , founded on August 27, 1930 , whose members gathered there in the summer of 1930 to swim and play water polo. At this time, the desire arose to re-establish the predecessor of the club, the Flensburg Swimming Club (SVF), which was founded in 1923 and held competitions of both sexes in the men's bathing establishment in August 1924. A first swimming festival took place a little later in September 1930 and in 1936 the association had the city administration built a 50 m swimming lane. After the Baltic Sea resort increasingly disintegrated five years later, it was closed to swimming in 1941.

At the end of the Second World War , the so-called Mürwik special area with the last imperial government under Karl Dönitz was located on the opposite side of the fjord at the Mürwik Naval School . At the time of the surrender , numerous war and merchant ships were anchored in the fjord,

Ostseebad has been one of the landscape protection areas of the city of Flensburg since 1976 .

Part of the beach

On the site below the slope is the Sophienquelle , which was named after Peter Hinningsen's wife and was renovated in 1984 with the help of the Flensburg Beautification Association , so that it now provides water again. The beach, which can be used free of charge, is less crowded than the other beaches in the area, but it is still very busy, especially in summer. According to the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Health, the bathing water quality is considered "very good". The facilities of the Ostseebad include free parking spaces as well as a playground, beach volleyball fields, a barbecue area, a kiosk, a restaurant, toilets and showers on the beach. The seat of the rowing club in Flensburg is near the Baltic Sea .

The sign from the bridge with the note: “Warning! Risk of death"

A striking structure is a long bridge reaching into the sea. A special feature of the beach, which is temporarily monitored by the DLRG , is that the water depth increases only very slowly over many meters, so that one can still stand relatively far from the shore. This has already led to serious accidents after jumping off the bridge. In the end bridge area, the water depth is mostly around 1.50 meters. Only a few meters further on, at the eastern end, which is used for the support of ships, the water depth is then about 3 meters, but accidents have already occurred here. Jumping from the bridge is therefore prohibited. The high risk of accidents was also discussed in an emergency call episode.

From Ostseebad there is a view of the opposite side of the fjord, especially of the Mürwik Naval School , which is clearly visible from there , which is also called the Red Castle and is a popular photo opportunity. From this on the left, the Gorch-Fock exercise mast for the Gorch Fock cadets can be seen , where the trampoline roof camp is hidden behind trees . On the other side, to the right of the marine water tower , the KBA rises above the treetops. Also recognizable is the Tirpitz barracks, the former main building of the torpedo station in today's Sonwik . A little further south, next to a meadow at Finisberg in Volkspark, is the Flensburg sewage treatment plant near Kielseng . In addition to the conveyor slopes, the Ox Islands can also be seen in the distance .

Other bathing beaches in the area

The Wasserleben lido , a suburb of Flensburg, can be reached from Ostseebad by a short walk. Another lido in Flensburg is Solitüde on the opposite bank of the fjord. The lido in Glücksburg, which is one of the Baltic health resorts, is better known as Glücksburger Promenade .
