The marine water tower was after the water tower built in 1901–1902 on the west bank of the Flensburg Fjord , later called the old water tower , the second water tower within the city limits. As with the Naval School, the architect of the tower was Adalbert Kelm , who incorporated the tower into the overall appearance of the Naval School built between 1907 and 1910. - For Adalbert Kelm this was not his first water tower. In 1904 the Kiel-Wik water tower was built according to his plans.

The approximately 30 meter high marine water tower in Flensburg - Mürwik can be seen from the water, just like the marine school, and offers a corresponding view. As well as the adjacent Marine hospital (built approximately 1907 to 1913) of the tower is located at the south edge of the Naval Academy, and together with this the Vorburgbereich the castle . It served the naval school for a long period of time for water supply. In 1961, the Mürwiker water tower , which is actually in the Fruerlund district , took over the supply of the east bank. But it was not until 1981 that the Mürwik Naval School received a public water connection. The naval water tower had lost its original function. In the early 1990s, the water tank was removed, which damaged the masonry and the tower lost its stability. The navy had no more use for the tower and it was sold. But under this private owner, the tower apparently continued to fall apart.

Sometime in the early 2000s, a family became aware of the tower and bought it. In 2010 the tower was renovated and redesigned for the family's residential purposes. Since then, each floor of the tower has housed 55 m² of living space . An elevator inside leads next to the spiral staircase up to the top. In addition, a fire escape was retrofitted on the outer wall. However, the ladder does not go down to the ground, but only leads to the height that the fire brigade can reach with its ladders . The marine water tower has meanwhile been registered as a Mürwiker cultural monument. The contemporary redesign and rescue of the marine water tower was honored in 2013 with the first prize of the Federal Prize for Crafts in Monument Preservation . The family who owned the marine water tower shared the prize with three winners from Lübeck , who saved a listed hall house from decay.

In contrast to the Mürwik water tower in the Volkspark, Mürwik's marine water tower can not be climbed or viewed.
