The old water tower in Flensburg stands on the 59 meter high Mühlenberg on the west side of the Flensburg Fjord in the Friesischer Berg district . It was built in 1902 based on a design by the town planning officer Otto Fielitz , on the highest point of the town, where a windmill originally stood. The 29.3 meter high water tower forms an almost symmetrical ensemble with residential buildings attached on both sides.

Building

The tower is a brick building with a cylindrical basic shape, which is closed off by a conical roof with a copper lantern . Inside there is a loft container with a capacity of 350 m³. In contrast to many historical water towers, the container area does not protrude, it is only separated from the lower part of the tower by a cornice . The entrance portal is designed as a porch and has a round-arched skylight door.

The yellow brick walls are loosened up and structured by numerous decorative elements made of red brick, whereby various diamond patterns are used. The decorative masonry under the roof is extraordinarily elaborate.

The copper lantern creates a special accent. Its roof is dome-shaped and the arched windows are framed by pilasters .

History

The old water tower from Sandberg from

Up until the second half of the 19th century, Flensburg was supplied with decentralized drinking water from private and public wells . Then the population growth increasingly led to bottlenecks. In addition, an investigation commissioned by the military authorities revealed significant hygienic deficiencies. As a result, the city college decided in 1879 to build a central water supply . The civil engineer CJ Hansen was entrusted with the planning.

The system initially consisted of a waterworks near the Baltic Sea resort on the fjord and an elevated earth tank on the 59 m high Mühlenberg. The waterworks pumped the water from six sources using 16 wells and then pumped it to the elevated tank, which could hold 600 m³.

In the following years, Flensburg continued to grow, and multi-storey residential buildings were also built in the higher areas. The level of the elevated tank was no longer sufficient to guarantee the water pressure. So the city decided to build a water tower, for which purpose it acquired the property adjacent to the elevated tank. Civil engineer G. Oesten planned the building. The tower was completed in 1902, the water level was now approx. 76  m above sea level. NN .

In 1961 the city had another water tower built on the east side of the fjord . The height of the container had to be adjusted exactly to the level of the old water tower, as both towers feed into the same network.
