The water tower Flensburg-Mürwik ( Mürwiker water tower ) stands on a hill in the Volkspark on the east side of the Flensburg Fjord in the district of Fruerlund , which is often added to the district of Mürwik . The water tower is also accessible as a lookout tower in summer and offers a view of the fjord and the city of Flensburg as far as Denmark . The water tower is a landmark on the east bank of the city and is protected as a cultural monument of the Fruerlund district .

Building

The funnel-shaped building by the architect Fritz Trautwein no longer shows any resemblance to traditional water towers and was nicknamed the Flower Vase by the people of Flensburg because of its shape.

The structure begins at the bottom with a comparatively small circular floor plan, initially constricts at the top and then spreads out in a funnel shape up to a diameter of 24 meters. There is a surrounding viewing gallery at a height of 26 m. Above the gallery, the turquoise-colored building tapers off again and ends with a very flat conical roof. A vertical structure is created by 18 white-painted reinforced concrete columns protruding outwards . They have the shape of a parabolic section and support the entire construction.

In the center of the tower there is an elevator shaft for visitors to the viewing gallery. As an alternative to the elevator, stairs also lead upwards. The water tank begins below the gallery and continues up to under the roof. It has a capacity of 1500 m³. It is a double concrete container with the basic shape of an Intze container . The inner and outer container parts can be filled independently of each other, an advantage for repair and maintenance work.

To the building history

As a result of the population increase after the Second World War , the east side of the fjord was more developed. With the culvert pipeline running under the fjord , from the west side to the east side of the fjord, the water supply through the old water tower on Mühlenstraße could not be guaranteed in the long term. The water pressure on the east side was too low. In addition, the container of the old water tower was too small. If the pumps failed, it emptied in just twenty minutes. In the early 1960s it was therefore decided to build a new water tower for the east bank. At that time there were already technologies that enabled a water supply with constant pressure even without a water tower. However, building a tower had the advantage that even in the event of a power failure, the supply of constant water pressure was guaranteed for hours.

The height of the water tank had to be approx. 76  m above sea level. NN must be adjusted to the container height of the old water tower on the west side of the fjord, as both towers feed into the same network. A hill in the south of the Mürwik district, near Fruerlund, with a height of around 47  m above sea level , offered itself as a location NN and represented the highest point of the ballast mountain.

After an architectural competition, the city entrusted the Hamburg architect Fritz Trautwein (1911–1993) with the construction. Among other things, he designed the Grindel skyscrapers and the television tower in Hamburg . The construction was carried out by Philipp Holzmann AG . Since September 26, 1961, first test fillings were made. The new water tower finally went into operation in November 1961. The construction costs amounted to 970,000 DM. It was not until 1981 that the new water tower also replaced the Mürwik marine water tower , which had previously supplied the Mürwik naval school separately.

In 2010 the tower was restored. The glass panes, the floor of the outside platform and the paint have been renewed. In the lower area of the water tower there is now an exhibition on the history of the water tower.

Use as a lookout tower

The water tower can be visited from the beginning of May to the end of September and it serves as a viewing tower . The water tower is the only operated water tower in Schleswig-Holstein that has an outside platform for visitors.

The Volkspark below can be seen from the water tower. In the distance you can see the Mürwik naval school with the naval water tower and the old water tower . In addition, the Nikolaikirche , the Marienkirche , the St. Jürgen's Church and the Catholic Church of St. Mary's Sorrowful Mother can be discovered. Part of the Flensburg Fjord with the Danish bank can also be seen. The port area of the city is only partially visible. Other buildings that can be recognized are: the Old Museum , the Flensburg City Hall , the northern Zombeck Tower at Trollseeweg (Troll Tower North), the Flensburg shipyard , the Flensburg municipal utility , the forest school and the Goethe school . Wind turbines can be seen in various parts of the city . The mountain mill is also clearly recognizable, as is the nearby district of Fruerlund .

The tower is particularly popular with school classes and kindergartens. Families and bridal couples also often use the offer.

  • In 2015 and 2016, the self-help building association pays the entry fee of one euro, which is why entry is almost free during this time. The tower is also used as a sales point for ice cream during opening hours .
  • A Flensburg poem from the time after the construction of the tower praises him with the words: “If you don't want to roar in the tower, mother must ' borrow water every morning - right down at the Nordermarkt at Neptune! [...] Think this tower gives water for many thousands of people! - But Neptune, offended, shows him the back side day and night. ”The Neptune fountain is covered by houses, the orientation described in the poem is otherwise correct.
  • On April 1, 2015, MoinMoin claims that the water tower should be painted sand-colored in consultation with the SBV. A panorama café should be built on the roof and free climbing should be allowed. It was an April Fool's joke .
