History and equipment
The parish of St. Jürgen was founded on July 1, 1895, thus breaking away from the Adelby parish . Since they did not have a church, the congregation first celebrated their service in the Heiliggeistkirche , which at that time still belonged to the St. Mary's congregation . In 1900 the majority of Jürgensby was incorporated. The church was built a little later, in the years 1903 to 1907, on the site of the former St. Jürgen Hospital, a medieval hospital for leprosy and plague patients, but which no longer existed long before it was built, and after the holy one Georg named - the northern German variant of the name Georg is Jürgen.
The St. Jürgen Church was designed by the architect Oskar Hossfeld based on the brick Gothic. Alexander Wilhelm Prale took over the construction management . The St. Jürgen Church is a pillar church with a transept , a polygonal chancel flanked by two round towers in the west and the high, rectangular, pointed bell tower with the main portal at the east end. A net vault spans the interior .
The word of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount is written in stone above the main entrance : Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness because they should be satisfied ( Mt 5 : 6 LUT ). The pulpit of the church was designed by Heinrich Ringerink around 1600 and was previously in the Heiliggeistkirche. In view center of the altar with its neo - altarpiece , which was adapted to the style of the pulpit. The altarpiece with an original depiction of the parable of the prodigal son comes from Hans Peter Feddersen . The surrounding galleries with scenes from the life of Jesus were also modeled on the style of the historical pulpit. In the church there is one of the rare sculptural representations of the Schleswig reformer Hermann Tast . It was probably carved between 1903 and 1907. Heinrich von Zütphen shows another illustration .
The organ with 28 registers on two manuals and a pedal was built into the neo-baroque prospectus of 1907 by Detlef Kleuker in 1976 and renovated in 2007 by Heiko Lorenz.
Some of the original windows of the church were in June 1945 by the explosion accident at Kielseng , a munitions explosion in Flensburg's harbor area destroyed.
The church is now one of the cultural monuments of Jürgensby . Together with the Mürwiker water tower in the Fruerlund district (built in 1961) and the main tower of the Mürwik naval school (built in 1907/1910), which is located a little further north on the water in Mürwik , it dominates the east bank of the city and is therefore used in graphic depictions of the east bank often used as a landmark. The building of the Flensburg Open Canal is directly opposite the church and the parish hall .
In 2012, damage was found that resulted in the church not being allowed to enter for some time. Since then, donations have been collected for the renovation. In August 2014, a summer festival at the town hall, for example, took place and it was one of Hans-Ruprecht Leiss designed puzzle with standing above the harbor sold St. Jürgen Church for the good cause. On March 15, 2015, the congregation celebrated the reopening after almost three years. The vault was successfully renovated in 2014 with six stainless steel rods at a height of ten meters, sponge and mildew rot in eight places was painstakingly removed. Bricklayers and carpenters had to replace a number of roof beams as well as large pieces of masonry - the largest of which was six meters long over two complete windows on the north wall. In one corner the footboards and sleepers were so soft that you could push them in with your finger. The renovation cost a total of 650,000 euros, with the church district bearing the majority at 412,000 euros, the rest was financed by donations.
