Life

Hans-Ruprecht Leiß, Lobster Tree (etching)

Hans-Ruprecht Leiß attended the Hermann-Tast-Gymnasium in Husum and graduated with the Abitur in 1975. In 1977 he went to the University of Education in Flensburg to study art education. In 1981 and 1985 he passed the necessary exams, but it quickly became clear to Leiß that the teaching profession could only be a stopover for him. In 1985 he said goodbye to his teaching post and his secure existence to become a freelance artist with a studio in Flensburg.

He became a member of the Federal Association of Visual Artists and in the following years created an extensive graphic, painterly and drawing work. His subjects are the sea and its inhabitants. He himself always says that he has spent his whole life with both legs in salt water, and wants to emphasize his strong affinity for the sea and the people by the sea. He often implements the images in the style of fantastic realism.

The collaboration with Falko Behrendt and Otto Beckmann began in 1992, resulting in joint exhibitions, folders, catalogs and calendars.

Hans-Ruprecht Leiß is represented with his own works in many public and private collections. He has numerous solo and group exhibitions between Flensburg, Helsinki , Frankfurt am Main and New York .

He became better known to a national public in 2005 through his poster design for Pope's visit by Benedict XVI. in Cologne (title: habemus papam).

In 2008 he paraphrased 30 lithographs for Feridun Zaimoglu's new version of the fairy tale Vom Fischer and his wife , which was published as a bibliophile book edition.

In 2014 designed Leiß for the rehabilitation of Flensburg St. Jürgen Church a puzzle on which the Church is shown. The copies were sold at a parish summer festival in August.

In December 2014 the Schleswig City Museum showed an anniversary exhibition for the 60th birthday of Hans-Ruprecht Leiß with a cross-section of his life's work.

In the summer of 2016, Leiß supported the efforts of the Flensburg Rotarians to restore this ship with a color etching of the historic saloon steamer Alexandra .
