History of the Günderoth court

The main building of Günderothschen Hof was built around 1634 by Duke Friedrich III . The red-painted palace initially served as a guest house. In 1675 it came into the possession of the ducal head stable master Friedrich von Günderoth, after whom the house is still named today. The main building is flanked by two half-timbered houses from the 18th century, which give the complex the closed character of a courtyard. In 1851 the city of Schleswig acquired the Günderoth farm. Since 1932 it has been the seat of the city museum.

Beginnings as a museum

The history of the city museum's collection began in 1879. In that year, citizens of Schleswig founded the Association for the Collection and Conservation of Patriotic Antiquities in the city of Schleswig . The first permanent exhibition, called the Altertumsmuseum , opened in the old town of Schleswig in the Gallberg 3 building, which the city made available for museum purposes in 1892. The sponsor was the antiquity association for Schleswig and the surrounding area, newly founded in 1903 . The exhibition showed the history, culture and folk art of Schleswig and the region.

In 1930 excavations at Haddebyer Noor led to the idea of building a Haithabu museum in Schleswig . The magistrate made the Günderoth farm available for this purpose in 1932. The prerequisite for this was that the newly created Schleswig-Haithabu Museum should include the holdings of the Antiquities Museum .

Realignment and today's permanent exhibition

In the years after 1950, the profile of the museum was realigned: From then on, the city's history up to the present was comprehensively presented in the permanent exhibition. The exhibition was supplemented by special collections and special exhibitions on various topics. Initially the house was called the Städtisches Museum , since 2001 it has been called the Stadtmuseum . In addition to the exhibition space in Günderothschen Hof, the city museum has two branches: the museum for outsider art and the Holm museum.

The exhibition on the history of the city is located in the four-storey palace, the main building of Günderothschen Hof. Represented the most important historical stations of Schleswig, the Danish-German past, the history of Schleswig as the capital of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein , the Nazis and the period after 1945. Thematic special areas the Cabinet with Schleswiger are faience , a room on the history of fishing village on the Holm (Schleswig) and the Schleswig room, which gives an insight into the living culture of a middle-class family in the 19th century. The toy collection is on display in the attic, including dollhouses , paper theaters , tin toys and rocking horses from around 1900. The private collection goes back to the Schleswig pediatrician Joachim Gunkel and comprises more than 500 exhibits.

In the two half-timbered houses flanking the main house, a former granary and the former stable building of the Günderothschen Hof, exhibitions on the history of photography and special exhibitions are shown. In one of the half-timbered houses is the Teddy Bear House , which has presented a private collection of historical teddy bears since 2002 .

In the former school in the Friedrichsberg district, the city museum exhibits a historical printing press . Above all, objects from former Schleswig-Holstein companies are on display, for example a complete hand -setting and a functional Linotype typesetting machine . The exhibits remind us that Schleswig was one of the early printing sites in the late Middle Ages.
