Silkeborg ( ˈse̝lkəˌpɒˀ ) is a town in the middle of the Danish region Midtjylland . Silkeborg is the administrative headquarters of Silkeborg Municipality , which was formed after the municipal reform in 2007 from the existing municipalities of Gjern , Kjellerup , Silkeborg and Them .

geography

Silkeborg is about 40 km west of Aarhus and almost 35 km south of Viborg on the railway line between Herning and Skanderborg . The city lies on both sides of the Silkeborg Langsø, which is crossed by the longest river in Denmark, the Gudenå . About 11 km west of Silkeborg is the Toteisloch Bølling Sø , the hill Himmelbjerget about 12 km southeast.

history

The first traces of settlement in Silkeborg can be dated to around 1200. Around 1400 a monastery and an official seat for the bishops in Aarhus were built in Silkeborg. Until 1662 the original district of Silkeborg Len was under the administration of Silkeborg Castle ( Silkeborg Slot ), then under the administration of Silkeborg Amt. In the structural reform of 1793, the district was divided among other communities.

In 1844 the entrepreneur Michael Drewsen received permission to build a paper mill in Silkeborg. Due to the economic boom, Silkeborg was given the status of a trading center in 1846 and town charter on January 1, 1900. The church was completed in 1877.

politics

The mayor of Silkeborg is called Steen Vindum (since 2014). Before him, Jens Erik Jørgensen from the conservative People's Party and Jørn Würtz from the Socialist People's Party held this office.

Silkeborg has twinned cities with Savonlinna ( Finland ), Árborg ( Iceland ), Arendal ( Norway ), Giżycko ( Poland ), Kalmar ( Sweden ) and Corona ( USA ).

Museums

The Silkeborg Museum “Hovedgården” is located in the oldest building in the city, which dates back to 1767. The archaeological exhibition focuses on the Iron Age. Regular events

The annual Riverboat Jazz Festival is held in June . Another musical event, the Country Music Festival , offers a large open-air concert of country music every second weekend in August.

AUTOMANIA, the Silkeborg Automobile Festival, takes place every last weekend in August in and around Silkeborg.

Economy and Infrastructure

Notable industries are the paper (historical) and machine industries . The Jyske Bank has in Silkeborg its headquarters.

In Silkeborg is the National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) of Denmark.

The children's furniture manufacturer Leander has its headquarters here.
