Until December 2006, Kjellerup was a Danish municipality in what was then the Viborg Office in East Jutland . Since January 2007 it has been part of the new Silkeborg Municipality together with the “old” Silkeborg Municipality , Gjern Municipality and Them Municipality .
Kjellerup Municipality was created in the course of the Danish administrative reform of 1970 and comprised the following Sogn :

- Sjørslev Sogn
- Thorning Sogn
- Vinderslev Sogn
- Vium Sogn
