history
Arendal got a tariff privilege in 1523. The sailing traffic was at times so high that you could walk dry feet on the ships from the town hall to the island of Hisøy . The main export goods were wood and iron ore . In 1875 the approximately 4,000 inhabitants of Arendal owned around 350 sailing cargo ships with a total crew of around 4,000 men. Agder owned about two percent of the world's shipping tonnage in the late 1870s . With the triumphal march of steamships , Bergen, Oslo and Trondheim gained greater importance within the Norwegian merchant fleet and the proportion of ships held in Arendal decreased significantly by 1925. Nowadays, on average, one ship calls at port a day. In 2000, 342,000 tons were handled.
In 1796 Arendal got its own theater. In 1832 the first newspaper, " Den Vestlandske Tidende ", was founded. Also in 1832 Arendal got its own library and museum with the name " Arendals Skoles public library og museum ". After Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen , Arendal became the fourth city in Norway to have a public museum. From this the Aust-Agder-Museum , the Aust-Agder-Archiv and the Arendal Library , today Aust-Agder Kulturhistoriske senter, were called later .
In 2002 Arendal was affiliated with the global virtual UN university and offers Masters courses.
