geography

The city was named after the Lygna River that crosses it. Lyngdal means something like "Lygna Valley". The Lygna River flows into the Lyngdalsfjorden to the west of the city.

history

The settlements Austad, Å and Kvås are actually the primordial cells of Lyngdal municipality. There are settlements around the rectory at the time. The pastor lived in Å church. This church was currently the focal point where people met. The pastors Gustava and Gabriel Kielland (1837–1854) are well-known pioneers of missionary work. Gustava Kielland is known throughout the country as the mother of the women's association. Ommundo Oftebro and Tobias Udland from Lyngdal were among others the first missionaries in Norway. Many missionaries have set out from Lyngdal all over the world. People lived from agriculture, silviculture, fishing and seafaring.

Agnefest on Rosfjord has been Lyngdal's natural harbor since 1771

South of Lyngdan, the suburb of Agnefest, which belongs to the city, extends to the Rosfjorden. Agnefest took advantage of the favorable location with a natural harbor on the Rosfjorden, which is deep enough and can be used for the navigation of large merchant and transport ships. Accordingly, the natural harbor was already registered as a landing site in 1771.

Lyngdal received its town charter on January 1, 2001. The main industries in the coastal town are timber and tourism.

The city was created in 1963 through a merger with the cities of Austad and Kvås. It bordered in the southeast on Lindesnes , in the northeast on Hægebostad and in the north on Kvinesdal , in the west on Farsund.

On January 1, 2020, the municipality of Audnedal was incorporated as part of the local government reform in Norway .
