Birkenes is a municipality in the Norwegian Fylke (province) Agder , formerly Aust-Agder . The municipality was founded in 1837 when Norway was first divided into municipalities. The current borders were created in 1967 when Bikenes was merged with Herfoss and Vegusdal .
