Kvinesdal is a municipality in the Agder province in Norway . It covers a total of 963 km², including lakes and fjords. Kvinesdal has 5987 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020), who are called kvindøl in Norwegian .
etymology
The name Kvinesdal comes from the old Norwegian Hvínisdalr , formed from the name of the fjord Hvínir - now the Fedafjord - to hvína : "screech" or "squeak", and dalr , which means "valley". Kvina is now the name of the river that flows through Kvinesdal and flows into the Fedafjord.
geography
The municipality's land area is sometimes referred to as "Little Norway" as it mirrors the shape of the entire mainland of Norway. In the north there are several villages and hamlets, such as the former mining town of Knaben , now a very popular ski resort. The topography of the municipality is characterized by two long valleys that run parallel. Both valleys are crossed by rivers, Kvina in the northwest and Litleåna in the northeast. The municipality's coat of arms represents the confluence of the two rivers.
In the south the country becomes flatter and is therefore characterized by agriculture. However, it is completely surrounded by high mountains that only meet the sea in the Fedafjord. In addition to the municipal administrative center of Liknes, which is located roughly in the middle of Kvinesdal, there are two other villages with their own churches: Feda and Fjotland .
Connections with the USA
Kvinesdal is particularly well known for its close ties with the United States : in the century between 1850 and 1950, a significant part of the community emigrated to North America. For this reason, the so-called Aussiedlerfestival ( Norwegian : Utvandrerfestival ) is celebrated in the village every summer . No other municipality in Norway has as many American citizens per inhabitant as Kvinesdal.
