Knaben is a village in the municipality of Kvinesdal in southern Norway .

The rare molybdenum ore was mined here from 1885 to 1973 . Molybdenum found a high market in the war industry, since steel with a molybdenum alloy becomes more break-proof and stable. During the Second World War , the Wehrmacht occupied Norway and secured the mine and the extraction of the ore. In 1943, boys were bombed twice and mining was completely shut down. After the war, mining was resumed, but with falling prices. In 1973 the mine was closed. At the beginning of the 1970s a school was built for the children of the workers, the Leirskole boys. It was also closed when the mine closed and has served as the school camp of the Norwegian schools ever since. During the Norwegian holidays it is open for up to 40 people.

Museum and memorial

Nowadays there is a museum in the former administration building of the mine. A bronze statue by the Norwegian sculptor Gøril Førsund has been a reminder of mining since 2008 and shows a miner pushing a mine hunt.
